One hundred and ten Tacoma public school music students posed for a group portrait in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop before setting off for Spokane to perform at the Music Educator's National Conference of Region #1, opening March 29th, 1941. In Spokane they met and competed against 45,000 music students from Washington, Oregon and Montana. Included in the photograph are members of local middle and high school bands, orchestras, choruses and Stadium High School's 60 member Girls Glee Club. Donna Mae Jaden, who became the movie actress Janis Paige, is third from the right in the second row. (T. Times 3/21/1941 p.13, names in caption under photograph)

ca. 1957. Clover Park High School's Class of 1957 is appropriately capped and gowned prior to graduation ceremonies held in the school's gymnasium. Rows of empty chairs face them, to be filled with hundreds of family and friends. Graduation ceremonies were held on June 6, 1957, with 284 blue-and-white clad seniors receiving diplomas. Bonnie Jean Chavis, Nancy Hannaford, and Edwin Hall made speeches regarding the senior class motto, "Men and Ideas." ca. 1941. This was part of the Clover Park High School football team with coach Ralph Lackey in front of a grandstand, circa 1941. Clover Park had five returning lettermen and came in third in their league with a record of five wins, two losses and one tie. Two of the wins, against Eatonville and Bellarmine, were non-league. The players were identified in the 1941 Klahowya yearbook as front row: Cliff Dawdy, Bud Schwab, Marvin Kasemeier, Don Tinkcom. Second row: DeVere Bailey, Steve Tish, Wes Saxton, Wally Hager (captain), Maxwell James, Bob Carbone. Third row: Bill Grondahl, Jim Spangler, Jim Allphin, Coach Lackey, Doug Godfrey, Jack Carbone and Bob Brock. (1941 Klahowya, p. 42-43)

Jason Lee School 9A class. The ninth grade class poses in the school gymnasium under a basketball hoop with a torn net. Jason Lee opened in 1924, the first and biggest of the six intermediate schools built with proceeds from a $2.4 million bond issue passed in 1923. By the end of its first year, the school was already overcrowded with 1600 students in a school built to accomodate 1200. It was added on to in 1968 and remodeled in 1966 and 1972. The school reopened in 2002 after extensive remodeling.

ca. 1935. Boy from Jason Lee Orchestra playing bassoon in front of school. The boy is probably Bruce Allen, a noted juvenile bassoonist, who would have been around 9 years old at the time of this picture. The bassoon is one of the most difficult wood instruments and is usually not attempted by such young players. By 1938, Bruce had been studying for over 2 years and played in the Tacoma Times Jr. Concert Band (formerly known as the Mickey Mouse Band.) He was placed first chair by the conductor of the Junior Orchestra at the 1938 high school music festival in St. Louis. (T. Times 1/8/1937, pg. 7; T. Times 5/20/1938)
