ca. ,1925. In 1925, the building at 1221-23 Pacific Ave. housed the 4 L Hall, home to the "Loyal Legion of Loggers & Lumbermen." The National Department Store was located at 1223 Pacific and sold camping and outdoor goods, as well as shoes and furnishings. The store is littered with signs advertising a "going out of business" sale. The address also included 113-23 So. 13th St. This structure, originally built for the National Bank of Commerce, was remodeled in 1922 for the 4-L's, apparently including the removal of several upper floors. The building was later demolished. (WSHS)

Community Chest. Portrait artist and subject at 13th and Pacific U.S.O. Volunteers provided many services for the military men stationed here. In January of 1943, portrait artist Laurie MacLeod posed with her painting of Chief Petty Officer Joe Catanzinto, of Punxsutawney, Penn., and the model himself. Mr. Catazinto drew the lucky number in the Wednesday contest at the USO Club at 13th & Pacific and won the sitting and portrait. He planned to send it to his family back home. Mrs. MacLeod held the drawing while her husband Robert MacLeod, also an artist, attended his Coast Guard Reserve meeting. The couple has a studio in New York until four years prior when they moved to this area and built a home at Lakota Beach. (TNT 2/3/1943, pg. 1)

On February 7, 1943, thousands of citizens streamed in and out of Tacoma's four USO recreational centers celebrating the one year anniversary of the completion of two of those centers. At the center at 1221-23 Pacific Ave. (pictured), 4500 visitors were counted before organizers gave up on the count. Governor Arthur B. Langlie (seated right) has challenged Pvt. Owen Roach of Illinois to a game of checkers. Onlookers include, left to right, R.P. Banner, USN, Capt. Troutt, Mayor Harry P. Cain, Maj. Gen. Charles H. White, Mrs. Helen Purdie and Maj. An unidentified singer, possibly Mickey McDougall, performed with a small combo for the fourth program of the new Grassi Brothers "Jamboree" radio program. The September 7, 1943 program was broadcast live on KTBI radio at 8:30 pm from the USO at 13th and Pacific Avenue. The Grassi brothers owned and operated a used car dealership at 1007 So. J Street; their radio program on KTBI was broadcast every Tuesday evening from 8:30 to 9:00. KTBI began broadcasting in August of 1941 from studios on the 2nd floor of the Puget Sound Bank building, 1117-9 Pacific Ave. KTBI later became KTAC. (TNT 8/22/1943 p.B-10 ad)

United Service Organization Travellers Aid Service Easter Egg Hunt. Pvt. H. Shaboby of Chicago, Illinois and Seaman 1/c Michael V. Moauro of Canton, Ohio found the golden eggs in April of 1944, which entitled them to make a free telephone call home. The two winners holding up their golden eggs, unidentified USO staff and servicemen in photo (T. Times, 4/11/44, p. 16).

In April of 1944 the U.S.O. Travellers Aid Service at 13th and Pacific hosted a special Easter egg hunt. The two lucky winners who found the golden eggs that were hidden in the service center each received the special prize of a free telephone call home. As four service men and two travellers aid employees listened in, Pvt. H. Shaboby (left) of Chicago, Illinois and Seaman 1/c Michael V. Moauro of Canton, Ohio waited for their calls to go through. When Seaman Moauro's mother heard her son's voice she wept, and couldn't talk to him; his father came to the phone. Eight members of Edward B. Rhodes post No. 2 of the American Legion posed with Major William Miller of the Tacoma Salvation Army (far right) on December 20, 1944. Tacoma's Legionnaires took charge of the Salvation Army's Christmas kettles on Saturday December 23rd. All the funds raised that day went to help ex-servicemen and their families, the sick and the elderly. The Legion bell ringers pictured are: (l to r) George F.
