These six unidentified golfers were just a fraction of the participants in the Northwest Pro-Presidents golf tournament held at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club on April 28, 1972. Western Washington golf professionals and club presidents teed off in twosomes at the one-day tournament. In 1972 the Northwest Pro-Presidents golf tournament was subdivided into three parts; each of the three branches of the northwest section of the PGA would have its own tournament. Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Built using Weyerhaeuser's new engineered dry lumber, the new Tacoma Country & Golf Club stands serenely on the shores of American Lake in August, 1965. Its two-level, 26,000 square foot structure is surrounded by old and new growth landscaping. Fire destroyed its predecessor in 1961 as it did the original clubhouse in 1909. Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Construction has been completed on the new Tacoma Country & Golf Club in August, 1965. Built on two levels, the new (third) clubhouse replaced a 50-year-old structure. Coincidentally, both the original clubhouse and its replacement, known as the "Grand Old Lady," were destroyed by fires. February, 1964, saw continuing construction of the new clubhouse at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club on Gravelly Lake Drive. Workers are in the process of framing the large building while a crane lifts a heavy beam. The Tacoma Country & Golf Club, situated on 237 acres on the shores of American Lake, is the oldest continuing country club west of the Mississippi. Its stately clubhouse was gutted by fire in 1961. Progress report on construction of the new Tacoma Country & Golf Clubhouse in late March, 1964. Work progresses steadily on the new clubhouse located on American Lake. Shakes are being installed on the roof while the brick chimney is being constructed. The $750,000 project, including remodeling of the caddy house, was expected to be completed in December. A roofer, hammer in hand, is photographed on April 3, 1964, in the act of nailing down shakes on the roof of the new Tacoma Country & Golf Clubhouse. The former clubhouse, built after its predecessor was destroyed by fire in 1909, was itself gutted by fire on December 21, 1961. Work was expected to be completed in December, 1964. Six bankers' wives are pictured on the lawn of the country club in the shade of a large tree. They took advantage of the first day of summer to enjoy the luncheon and bridge party. Exterior view of the ivy-covered Tacoma Country & Golf Club. The Tacoma Country & Golf Club, established in 1894 by Alexander Baillie, is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi. The clubhouse, as viewed in early June of 1925 prior to the Pacific Northwest open championship, had been completely rebuilt due to a fire in 1909. The new clubhouse, later known as the "Grand Old Lady," included a gracious spiral staircase . It, too, would suffer the same fate as its predecessor - destruction by fire in 1961. Alexander Baillie, second from left, was honored during a banquet held at the Tacoma Country & Golf on October 22, 1948. He is seen here with several members of the golf club wishing him well. Mr. Baillie was born in Breckin, Forfashire, Scotland on September 9, 1859. He came to Tacoma in 1888 and was employed by Balfour Guthrie Shipping Company. The venerable Scotsman was one of the founders of the Tacoma Country & Golf Club and he served as its first president in 1894.

A 150-guest dinner party in honor of 89-year-old Alexander Baillie was held at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club in October of 1948. Mr. Baillie, on the left, is escorted at the banquet by Puget Sound National Bank president Reno Odlin, in the center, and businessman Audsley M. Fraser, right. Alexander Baillie was one of the founders in 1894 of the Tacoma Country & Golf Club and served as its first president. Recognized as the "father of golf in the west," he was responsible for the construction of the first golf course in Washington state. Mr. Fraser, also of Scottish descent, established Fraser's store in Lakewood in 1934. Fraser's carried gifts, glassware, linens, hosiery, gloves, dinnerware, silver, jewelry, leather goods, luggage, stationery and greeting cards. Both Mr. Baillie and Mr. Fraser are wearing Scottish clothing; kilts, knee socks, jackets and vests and sporrans (the pouches hanging from their waists.) Mr. Baillie has a traditional ruff at his neck while Mr. Fraser wears a collar and bow tie. (TNT 10-22-48, p. 1-article only)
