ca. 1931. St. Nicholas Hellenic Tabernacle, 1523 Yakima Ave. So., Tacoma. This Byzantine structure was built in 1925 from a design by architect Silas E. Nelsen. It is now known as St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Bowen # CHU-003

ca. 1956. Wedding portrait of Dorothy Almquist with her four bridesmaids. The women stand in front of ornate religious paintings and an altar. Dorothy Ruby Almquist and James Samuel Bulldis were married on July 21, 1956 in the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The bride was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Conrad Almquist and attended Stadium High School. She wore a gown of white lace and tulle over satin with a mandarin collar. To the right of the bride is Mrs. Fiore Nomellini, the matron of honor, wearing a gown of pale green dotted swiss. The bridesmaids are Ruth Wight, Sharon Viafore and Georgean Warrer. Choir at St. Nicholas Church, 17 girls and the choral director standing in the sanctuary of the church on July 31, 1945. The walls are painted with religious icons. The second choir member in the front row (L-R) has been identified as Gloria Victoria Hallis. Miss Hallis was 18 years old at the time of this group portrait. She would be the church organist for many years and active in the Daughters of Penelope. Miss Hallis' parents owned Hallis Produce Co. where she was employed as head bookkeeper her entire life. Born on June 10, 1927, Gloria Victoria Hallis was almost 19 years old at the time of this March, 1946, portrait. She would later marry and become the mother of two daughters, Despina K. McLaughlin Alatsis and Stephanie McLaughlin. With property that her parents gave her, she and her husband built a home at 116 South 40th St. where she lived throughout her life. Gloria worked for her father's business, Hallis Produce Co., as head bookkeeper. She was an organist for the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church for many years and an active lifetime member of the Daughters of Penelope. She would pass away on December 22, 2003. The Order of AHEPA held their meetings at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. They participated in the annual bazaar held for the "Athenian Holiday", where you could find authentic Greek foods, pastries and handicrafts, all prepared by the Daughters of Penelope of the Order of AHEPA, the women's auxiliary group. The music and decorations helped create the atmosphere. View of members of the Order of AHEPA wearing fezzes with tassels and some are wearing medals.
