St. Joseph's Hospital was established in 1891 by the Sisters of St. Francis, Philadelphia Foundation. The original building was remodeled and now serves as the Nurses' Residence, the new hospital building was moved to South I Street in 1913. The hospital was gone through numerous improvements, which have kept the facilities completely modern. In 1907 St. Joseph's Hospital and School of Nursing was approved by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education and the Joint Commission of Hospital Accreditation, as a training center for nurses and interns. During World War I and World War II, St. Joe's had a Cadet Nurse Corps program funded by U. S. Public Health Services. Cadet nurses received a federal scholarship plan, which payed for their 30 month education program and their 6 month intern period under supervision. Left to right, Helene Hawthorne, Josephine Elizabeth O'Toole, LaVerne Larson, an unidentified student, and Betty Buckles passed a milestone on their way toward becoming nurses on Sunday August 1, 1948. They received their nurses caps. During the capping exercises, which were held at the St. Joseph's Nurses' Home, Sister Mary Jane, O.S.F. , places a caps on each student's head. Wearing their new caps, they proudly hold their Florence Nightingale lamps, as they stand before a statue of the Virgin Mary. (T. Times, 8/2/48, p. 3).

Three of the student nurses who are on the committee for the Winter Wonderland Carnival at St. Joseph's Hospital and School of Nursing hold boxes of artificial snow (made of fireproof mica flakes) and stuffed animals. They are, L-R, Colleen Miller, Marianne Medved and Ruth Belrose. Sisters of St. Joseph's hospital, nurses, alumnae and friends were sponsoring a Winter Wonderland carnival to benfit the school of nursing. The affair was to open with a baked salmon dinner followed by games and booths displaying gifts suitable for Christmas presents. (TNT, 11/29/1950, p.12)

Nine nursing students from the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing take a break from classes with a game of softball in this photograph from July of 1949. The woman wearing a nursing uniform, far left, second row, may be their coach. The students were in a three-year course, learning not only how to assist patients but also to sterilize bandages, prepare formula for infants and perform various other hospital duties. The school closed in 1973. TPL-3815

The School of Nursing was operated from 1900-1973 with a three-year course of instruction. The first class to graduate was in 1903. The first hospital building was designated the nurses' residence when the brick hospital opened in 1915.

The first hospital building was designated the nurse's residence when the brick hospital opened in 1915. The brick building was designed by Ruehr and Bergfelt, architects. It was demolished in 1976.
