The house was designed by architect E. A. Wager, and built by Cornell Brothers construction company; Charles H. Hyde was the original owner. George G. Franklin was the owner of Franklin Food Stores, a Tacoma grocery and meat store. Franklin Food Stores had five locations located throughout Tacoma. George G. was married to Alice S. Franklin, they lived at 425 Tacoma Avenue North, in Tacoma's Stadium District. Exterior view of the Franklin home, two large trees frame the view of the house, greenhouse on right.

George G. Franklin's family home was the winner of the Tacoma Times House Beautiful contest in 1947, this house had also been nominated in 1920. The home, located in Tacoma's Stadium-Annie Wright Historical District, eventually became the Central Lutheran Church Parsonage in 1975. Interior view of one of the bedrooms; a fireplace helps keep the bedroom warm in the cold winter months.

This beautiful home at 425 Tacoma Avenue North was built in 1905, in the Modern English Style. This house was built on part of Buckley's Hill; in 1887 this property and two blocks along the North side of Tacoma Avenue (from North 4th to 6th Street) were owned by James N. Buckley, Assistant General Superintendent for the Northern Pacific Railway Company. View of iron and glass dining table, chairs and side table, bird painting hangs above on wall; this was possibly the informal dining room at the home now owned by George Franklin.

In 1889 James N. Buckley was planning to build an elaborate house on this lot and a local newspaper featured a story with describing the future home. For some unknown reason the house was never built. Charles H. Hyde had this house at 425 Tacoma Avenue North built in 1905; it was later owned by Harold A. Allen, Henry Rhodes and George G. Franklin. Interior view of the spacious and beautifully decorated living room with sofas, chairs, paintings, lamps and tables. This photograph was taken on January 5, 1949.

Prize winning homes on House Beautiful contest, Times, Burt McMurtrie. The home of George G. Franklin took second place in the Tacoma Times House Beautiful contest in 1947. The house had been built in 1905 for Charles H. Hyde, E.A. Wager, architect. The home is surrounded with well maintained lawns and gardens. A large rose garden fills the area between the curved driveway and a greenhouse. The two-stories house has climbers coming up to the roof. (T.Times, 7/25/1947, p.18) TPL-8558

Alice S. Franklin was appointed President of the Tacoma Garden Club at a tea held at Doris McKendry's home. The club members had a tea reception and tour of Doris' garden, they also went on a tour of the beautiful Demarest Gardens in Gravelly Lake. Reception at George Franklin residence for Eugene List, TNT, Mrs. Hosmer. Following their performance February 16, 1949, at Temple Theater, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin opened their home on North Tacoma Avenue for a reception given by Sigma Alpha Iota sorority, College of Puget Sound, to honor Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Rosenthal of Paris and Miss Carroll Glenn. Mr. Rosenthal conducted the orchestra and Miss Glenn was the solo violinist. Seen here are, L-R, George G. Franklin, Alice S. Franklin, Carroll Glenn and Manuel Rosenthal.
