This aerial view of the Tacoma Yacht Club and the east corner of Point Defiance Park, just north of Ruston, was taken in August of 1948. The Point Defiance Ferry Terminal is in the upper right hand corner, and the buildings to the left of the marina belong to the ASARCO smelter. In 1934, a road was built along the bulkhead, just under the tree line, that passed under the pier that led to the ferry landing. Point Defiance's Funland Amusement Park is located top center and can be identified by the round shapes of some of the rides.

The Tacoma Yacht Club, located at Point Defiance, was included in the tourist sightseeing tour the "Kla-How-Ya" trail. Founded in 1889, the Club relocated to Point Defiance in 1914, near what is now the ferry dock. In an effort to find a mooring spot less vulnerable to winter storms, the Club relocated southeast under the high bank near the Tacoma Smelter. The former office building of Seaborn Shipyard was moved to the site by scow to serve as the clubhouse. In 1934, a road was built along the bulkhead under the ferry landing. The Yacht Club originated the Daffodil Marine Parade and the decorated-boat Christmas parade.

Over the years the Tacoma Yacht Club has had several homes. This is the Yacht club as it looked in August, 1936. The club house was originally built around 1916 as the office for Seabourne Shipyards. It was moved to this site for the Yacht Club by scow in 1923, and remodeled by Carl August Darmer, Architect. In 1936 it was remodeled for a second time by Silas Nelsen, Architect, as a modern 3 story structure. The second floor featured a 50 x 35 foot sun porch, glassed in on 2 sides. The first floor contained the quarters of Capt. and Mrs. Swanson. Capt. Swanson was the club caretaker. The 2nd floor contained the lobby, lounge and billiard room. The upper floor was a dance hall.
