On August 18, 1967, Pastor C. Russell Archer pointed out the detail on the arched door of the new home of the Faith Temple, 922-24 So. I St. Standing by him were Chairman of the Board of Trustees Arthur E. Alger (L) and assistant pastor, John R. Shearer. The modified Romanesque structure was previously home to the Swedish Mission Tabernacle and First Covenant Church. First Covenant sold the building in January, 1967, for $55,000 and moved to 3501 So. Orchard. Faith Temple's old church was located at So. 10th & K St. The congregation would march from their old location, now 1001 Martin Luther King Jr Way, to the new pictured church building on August 20th as part of the dedication ceremonies. Dressed as "Lucia Brides" for the St. Lucia Festival in December of 1951 were (left to right) Mildred (Mrs. Harald) Bergerson, Vivian (Mrs. Oak) Otness, Nancy (Mrs. Robert) Benoy and seated, Berdine (Mrs. Ray) Kulla. The four women were presiding over the holiday table at the Christmas tea held at the First Covenant Church. They wore white gowns with red sashes and crowns of lighted candles. The "Lucia Bride" is a symbol of light and charity during the dark winter days and is an advent of the Christmas season. It is observed on December 13th and in the United States often centered around church events in states with a large number of people with Scandinavian ancestry. (damaged negative) (TNT 12-8-51, p. 5-alt. photograph) (Additional identification provided by a reader)

This photograph from January, 1951 shows one of the churches designed by the architectural firm of Heath & Twichell in Tacoma during the early years of the 20th Century. Built in 1909 as the Swedish Mission Tabernacle, for many years it was home to the First Covenant Church. The two-story, Italianate-style brick church is one of the few non-residental buildings designed by Heath & Twichell that has survived. Today it is home to the Sure House Open Bible Church. Pilasters lead to pediments at the roof-line. The upper portion of the building appears to have been covered with metal sheathing. Ordered by Reverend R. L. Erickson. TPL-8338
