Woolworth's offered "Golden Fried Chicken" to-go by the bucket, bag or piece in 1970. Located in a corner of the store by the lunch counter, local business people or the casual shopper could satisfy their hunger at reasonable prices. A Woolworth's employee in white uniform poses next to the display of paper buckets and serving stand in this June, 1970, photograph. TPL-6408

The front window display of Woolworth's heavily advertised the store's "Golden Fried Chicken" to-go in June, 1970. Signs hanging on the window and in the store's interior advised that the chicken could be purchased by the bucket, bag or piece. The chicken would be kept hot by use of "Hot Sak," probably insulated bags, or in paper buckets. A female mannequin in apron poses in the window with a sign indicating mom would appreciate a day off from cooking, a hint that fried chicken would be a good substitute.

Woolworth's employees in Centennial dress. 1969 was the 100th anniversary of Tacoma's founding so businesses, along with civic organizations, joined in year-long celebrations. Old-fashioned bonnets, ties, badges, booklets, and bronze souvenir coins were among the items sold. The employees of the Woolworth Co. were among those who joyfully participated in Centennial events; on May 28, 1969, they posed in the fashions of old at the downtown store with bonnets, derbys, garters and gowns on display. Some of the headgear may have been purchased from the newly opened Centennial Mercantile Store at 9th & Broadway. Photograph ordered by the Woolworth Co.

This photograph of the recently completed million dollar F.W. Woolworth Co. building, 955 Broadway, was taken from across Commerce St., for the Roy T. Earley Co., engineers in January of 1951. The Woolworth store replaced the Fidelity Building that had stood at the corner of 9th and Broadway from 1890 until it was demolished in 1949. The News Tribune called the new building "the most up-to-date beautiful store of its kind in the world." After the store closed in 1993, it was sold and transformed into a giant telephone switching station with no public access, and its people-oriented uses limited to the art gallery space created in its street level windows.
