Exhibit showing transparancies and murals at Ferry Museum, Washington State Historical Society, Mr. Foster. The S.A. Perkins project depicted how this part of the Northwest developed first as North Oregon, the Washington Territory and then Washington State. It represented the entire state from Cathlamet to Okanogan, from Grays Harbor to Steptoe Butte. The show opened at the Ferry Museum January 23, 1949, (T.Times, 1/23/1949, p.2)

View of award winning architectural drawing; Alan Liddle's architectural drawing was awarded 2nd Prize. The drawing indicates this was drawn for the School of Architecture Alumni Prize Problem 1947. The 1949 Tacoma City Directory has Alan Liddle listed as a draftsman for Lea, Pearson & Richards architectural firm; the firm was located in the Tacoma Building at 1019 A Street.

B&I Sales store to show crowd, Mr. Bradshaw. The B&I Sales Company was owned by M.L. Bradshaw and E.L. Irwin and the store handled surplus merchandise, men's and boys' clothing, shoes, hardware, paints and electrical equipment. On January 27, 1949 a variety of shoppers examine items for sale.

Industrial edition, Banks, Times, Buzz. A view of the exterior of the Bank of California built in 1928 of Wilkeson sandstone and granite. The four ionic columns, which cost $3,500 each to build, stretch three stories up the front of the building. There were numerous banks and savings and loans with their headquarters in Tacoma at this time and they played an important role in the development of industry and the construction of buildings and homes in the area. Police and Fire Department communication system. Times, Earl Floathe. A view of headquarters of the new, up-to-date communication system for the Tacoma Police and Fire Department. A transmitter was also located at the intersection of 28th Street and 63rd Avenue NE in northeast Tacoma. The system was second to none in the United States. Sportsman of the Year at TAC, Bob Sanders. Chuck Congdon was voted Sportsman-of-the-Year by the Tacoma Athletic Commission and was presented with a plaque at a stag banquet at the Top of the Ocean. The choice was made by a group of civic leaders whose identity was not disclosed until after their choice was named. Mr. Congdon, the professional at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club, was the third recipient of the award. Frank Harting won in 1947 and John Heinrick won in 1948. Chuck Congdon had won the Canadian Open in the fall of 1948 and had tied for first place in the 1948 Tacoma Open. (TNT, 2/4/1949, p.14)

Tribune, Hogan's new store exterior, Harry Lynch. Walter Hogan owned eight grocery stores and had offices at 424 Puyallup Avenue. It is believed that this is store number 15 located at 2518 North Proctor. This exterior view shows the one-story concrete block facility with two doors on the street side. Four large windows are shown and a few crates of fruits and vegetables stand between the doors.

Ann Deyo, a fifth grader in Miss Hilda Meisner's class at Lowell School is about to play a recording of "Die Fledermaus" overture by Johann Strauss which they would hear performed at the matinee concert sponsored by the Tacoma Philharmonic and Meadowsweet Dairies, Inc. Henry F. Marcum is the officer in charge of the Tacoma Branch of the Veterans Administration. Mr. Marcum is himself a disabled veteran. He lost his right arm and two fingers on his left hand as a result of a shell blast near Saint Lo, France, shortly after D-Day at Normandy. The Veterans Administration office was busy. Tacoma Mayor Val Fawcett buys tickets from two Bellarmine Boosters. The names of the men were not listed in Richards Studio notes. These tickets may have been for the March 12th victory mixer honoring the 1949 City high school champs. Merchant patrolman of Tacoma Protection and Patrol Company, Times, Earl Floathe. On February 17, 1949 Morris Kleiner and Edwin Weller reenacted their investigation of a burglary at the Model Lumber Company. Morris Kleiner, owner of the company, and Edwin Weller, merchant patrolman, are pictured opening the door to enter the office. Mr. Kleiner had used Weller's merchant patrol service for 20 years. Ted Grunden, Tacoma's singing barber, locks the door of his barber shop in the Olympus Hotel with the tools of his trade held under his arm. After working 19 years at the same spot he relocated to the Riviera Barber Shop down the street at 908 Pacific Avenue. The Olympus Hotel was expanding their present tavern into a cocktail lounge. The color guard of the 4th Infantry Regimental Combat Team led one of the five battalions of soldiers who marched down Tacoma's streets on February 22,1949. The hour-and-a-half Washington's Birthday parade, which is passing the 900 block of Pacific Avenue, was staged in observance of National Security Week under sponsorship of the Reserve Officers Association. A total of 4,000 troops participated in the parade. Old City Hall, 625 Commerce Street, with its tall bell tower can be seen in the distance. (T.Times, 2/23/1949, p.1)

Military Parade, Times, Sandegren. Four of the five infantry battalions that marched in the Washington Birthday one and one-half hour parade show a massed strength of 2,400 men. This view shows the battalions marching north along Broadway. Soldiers marching at the front are just turning the corner in front of the Roxy Theater onto South 9th Street.
