ca. 1967. Doughnut Shop at Fort Lewis. Fort Lewis was, in essence, a miniature city. The Army military base provided its soldiers and their families with goods and services that could normally be found off-base. ca. 1967. Actor Darren McGavin accepts the key to the City of Tacoma from Mayor Harold Tollefson circa 1967. As a teenager, Mr. McGavin resided for several years at the Jessie Dyslin Boys Ranch. He paid a special visit to Tacoma in 1967 for the opening of the Value Village thrift store in South Tacoma; clothing would be collected and sold to the store for the benefit of the Dyslin Ranch. Mr. McGavin flew in several items belonging to movie star friends to aid in the store's opening.

Freeways are labeled and locations accentuated by white lines. Pierce County residents would be asked to support a $10 million bond that would assist King County in building a sports stadium should a site be chosen south of the airport. Old City Hall Plan
Only the clock tower is saved in this old City Hall proposal presented Tuesday to the Coty Council. The proposal, jointly made by Alan Liddle, James Harris and William Reed, local architects, calls for tearing down most of the old City Hall and building a new structure for a performing arts auditorium. The new structure would span Commerce Street and have its main entrance on Broadway, near the old Elks Temple at left. TNT 05-10-1967 A6.

ca. 1967. Two boats under construction. Work continues on two Tacoma Boatbuilding projects at the Port Industrial Yard in the latter part of 1967. Both are 177-foot tuna seiners and built of steel. The vessel in the rear is believed to be the "Bold Venture" which will be launched on January 20, 1968. 500 tons of St. Regis semi-bleached pulp are being loaded onto the SS Alemannia for passage to Bremen, Germany, on December 6, 1966. The ship is docked at the Port of Tacoma. This proud hunting dog belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Charles McPhail stood at attention beside a large collection of trophies and ribbons on December 1, 1966. Many award winning ribbons were taped to the stone fireplace in the McPhail residence, 8301 Tucka Way S.W. There were a number of silver trays and other trophies next to the dog. Choral group at the University of Puget Sound. The university's Madrigal Singers posed for a group portrait in the school's Jacobsen Recital Hall on November 11, 1966. Directed by Dr. Bruce Rodgers, the Madrigal Singers were preparing to present the 15th annual Christmas program December 6-10th on campus. Names of group members were printed in the News Tribune's 12-4-66 article. (TNT 12-4-66, C-19)

Seven exuberant Cheney Studs Courteers demonstrated their basketball skills during a session in the Western State Hospital gym on November 5, 1966. The Courteers were a collection of local middle school basketball players sponsored by philanthropist Ben Cheney. They put on fast-paced performances at high school, college and professional half-time shows. This photograph was used by the News Tribune in their March 5, 1967 edition; the Courteers had been invited to perform at the NCAA regional basketball tournament in Corvallis, Oregon, on March 18th. Glasgow's - Villa Plaza. Glasgow's would open a new store in Lakewood's Villa Plaza Shopping Center in October, 1966. The furniture store would celebrate with an open house starting from October 17th. View of storefront with double wood doors, expansive display windows. The dinner was the official "kick-off" for Tacoma festivities celebrating October as a national hospitality event. Harold Evans, Mrs. Ken Ferguson and Wilfred Sargeant admire the chrysanthemums on display on September 29, 1966 at the home of Mrs. Ferguson, 1118 So. 62nd St. The 'mums may have been ready for entry in the Chrysanthemum Growers of Tacoma Show at Visitation Hall the weekend of October 21, 1966. Grand opening of the Villa Plaza Pay 'n Save drugstore. It was opened seven days a week, including Sunday hours. Gordon Poyner, who had formerly operated the Everett store, was the store's manager. The 26th Pay 'n Save opened on September 27, 1966. The drugstore chain had grown from a single Seattle store in 1947 to an international firm by the mid-60s. The 18,000 square foot store located in the Villa Plaza Shopping Center would carry a full line of prescription drugs plus over 40,000 items of merchandise including cosmetics, camera equipment and sporting goods. A dentist works on a young patient while his assistant offers the next tool. Llewellyn Advertising Agency commissioned a series of photographs to promote school millage; this September 22, 1966, photograph was taken at Tacoma Vocational-Technical Institute where local dentists offered their services to selected pupils of the Tacoma School District.

Seattle-First National Bank opened a branch in Puyallup in 1966. The contemporary brick building was located at 205 S.W. Meeker (now 2nd Ave. S.W.). Customers could either utilize the drive-up window located under the overhanging roof or park in the bank lot to visit in person. Puget Sound National Bank employees vow to "stamp out Firstbank cards" by "boost [ing] the big one" on September 15, 1966. Several bankers are ready to toss Seattle-First National Bank's Firstbank cards into the burning trash can. They sought to promote BankAmericard as a means of obtaining instant loans and credit card purchase. Puget Sound National Bank had announced in June, 1966, that they would be issuing an "all-purpose card" available throughout the greater Tacoma area. PSNB was one of the first banks in the United States licensed to issue BankAmericard, previously only used in California. Card holders would not be required to have accounts at PSNB or Bank of America. Eventually, the card would be able to be used nationwide. Photograph ordered by Puget Sound National Bank. Elegant North end home, close to Stadium High School, restored to reflect its Victorian-era origins. Built in 1890 and known to many as the residence of David Dowd, the large home has an expansive porch, steeply pitched roof, and decorative shingles. The home is now the property of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hood, formerly of Alexandria, Virginia. The Hoods have filled their new home with many antiques including a Tiffany glass lamp, Hepplewhite furniture and a French hand-tooled prayer chair.
