College of Puget Sound's Junior Varsity football team was coached by Don Dahlquist (first row, right). In college, Dahlquist had been a star tackle for Utah State. The Junior Varsity football team was made up of forty athletes, mostly freshmen. Their season ended with three wins and three defeats, their biggest wins were against the City Firemen, 24 to 0, and Fort Lewis All Stars, 21 to 0 (Names appear in 1948 Tamanawas).

Lynn Wentworth (center) was an Assistant Professor of Art at College of Puget Sound. Prof. Wentworth is helping a student, wearing a CPS student smock) with a vase, an unidentified woman stand to her left. Lynn Wentworth was the head of the art department and helped institute the art facilities expansion program at CPS, moving the department into the third floor attic of Jones Hall, which gave them more space.

Delta Alpha Gamma alumnae formed a committee to plan the annual Christmas tea. Over 200 alumnae and 50 active members of College of Puget Sound's sorority have been invited to attend. In December of 1947, the College of Puget Sound was selling canned milk on campus. The milk bought by students, faculty and staff would be sent to war ravaged Europe as a Christmas gift. At the milk stand, an unidentified student was selling milk to CPS President R. Franklin Thompson with other students waiting in line, cash in hand. CPS had also adopted an orphanage, De Bon-Secours, in Paris and they would be sending CARE gift packages worth $875 to the children for the holidays. (Tamanawas, 1948).

The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. Rose Marie Murphy and Bruce Courtney Dennis were married November 30, 1952, at the Gail Pauline Day Memorial Chapel at the College of Puget Sound. Rose Marie wore a white suit and a dark hat. She carried a bouquet of orchids. Bruce chose a light, double-breasted suit. Bruce and Rose Marie were to make their home in Seattle after December 15th. Mark Griggs, son of Chauncey and Johanna Griggs, and his cat admire their portraits painted by Franz Gerstl. This portrait will be displayed along with other Tacoma owned pieces of art in a show presented by the Tacoma Art League and the Delta Phi Delta Art Honorary Fraternity at the galleries of the College of Puget Sound. Much of the artwork was created by Northwest artists and the portraits are all of prominent area families. Chauncey Griggs was the Director of the St. Paul and Tacoma Lumber Co. The dining room and kitchen of the "Tacoman," the model home built adjoining the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse for the fourth annual Tacoma Home Show. The dining rooms opens off the living area and is separated from the kitchen by folding accordion doors. The kitchen is tiled for easy cleaning of "splash areas" on walls and floors. The kitchen features a 1952 version of the old fashioned chopping block, which can be used for preparation of meat or as a bread board.

The Bergh-Griggs Co. exhibit booth at the 1952 Tacoma Home Show. The company was owned by Lyman R. Bergh and was located at 709 Pacific Ave. The company's specialties were plumbing and heating. Exhibit booth at the 1952 Tacoma Home Show for Miller Construction Co. advertising Skyline Terrace. These three bedroom homes were located on view lots, having views of the mountains, Tacoma, the Puget Sound or the Narrows Bridge. Several pictures are displayed and the different floor plans are named Stylemaster, Viewmaster and Economaster. Miller Construction Co. was a firm of general contractors headed by Edward P. Miller, president, and Glen W. Miller, vice-president, located at 6909 N. 13th. In 1952, Skyline Terrace had 25 homes under construction, with 10 completed.

The National Bank of Washington booth at the 1952 Tacoma Home Show offered low cost loans for buying or remodeling homes. At the table, a loan officer discusses a loan with a woman in a suit and laced up walking shoes. Another women to the left studies a displayed and glassed in scale measuring a home against a dollar. To the right of the display is a sign inviting viewers to match their nugget against those displayed to win a $20 savings account. The bank was located at 1123 Pacific Ave. and Carl L. Phillips was President of the bank.

The living room of the "Tacoman," the model home built adjoining the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse for the fourth annual Tacoma Home Show. The living area measured 380 square feet. The most modern feature of the room was the suspended ceiling panel, used for indirect lighting purposes. Baylaun mahogany framed the living space fireplace. The room was decorated in Country Modern, designed and crafted in Tacoma by Northwest Chair Co. The furniture has uncluttered lines that made it easy to care for.

Informal shoveling contest during October, 1940, ground breaking at C.P.S.for new Student Union Building. Mayor Harry Cain, in hat and cigarette in mouth, squats at right center. Norton Clapp is to Cain's left in photo. Norton Clapp served as a trustee of the college (later University) for 62 years, 19 of those as chairman of the board of trustees. Students and invited guests chortle at the sight of the unannounced shoveling contest pitting Bishop Bruce Baxter of Willamette University, C.P.S. president Edward H. Todd, Board of Trustees president E.L. Blaine and trustee Albert H. Hooker, Jr., on October 16, 1940. The contest was diplomatically declared a draw. Trustee Hooker was disqualified because his first shovelful of dirt fell on Dr. Todd's neck. Norton Clapp would go on to win the actual 4-man shoveling contest, besting Mayor Cain, the student body president and Chamber of Commerce president. Ground breaking ceremonies at C.P.S. for new Student Union Building. A group of coeds with shovels take their turn during Homecoming Week in October, 1940. The Student Union Building was the first of three building projects totaling $300,000 which had been recently approved by the Board of Trustees. The school's population was growing and new structures needed to be built to accommodate the students.

Lord Halifax, British Ambassador to the United States received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the College of Puget Sound (now UPS) on July 22, 1943. The degree was conferred by fellow Oxford alumnus and president of the college, Dr. R. Franklin Thompson (L) . Participating in the ceremony were Dean John D. Regester (R) and State Supreme Court Justice William J. Millard who is attaching the academic hood. Lord Halifax had a Doctorate in Science from the University of Glasgow and a Master of Arts from Cambridge. He had tutored and lectured at Cambridge before becoming a member of Parliament. Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, the 3rd Viscount of Halifax, was the British ambassador to the United States from 1940-1946. He was created an earl in 1944. His many offices and honors included viceroy of India, Knight of the Order of the Garter,privy councillor, secretary of war and foreign secretary. (T.Times, 6-30-43, p. 18, T.
