Scenes from Tacoma Little Theatre's production of Robert Sherwood's "Petrified Forest." The play opened June 5, 1939 and was the final offering of the 1939 theatrical season. The play starred Jane Richter, Herman Huseby and Merle Bennett. The realistic set was designed by Erich Richter. The realism carried over to the props, with the actors using real firearms carefully monitored by the Tacoma police department. The need for a "gambling machine" presented a problem as they were outlawed in Tacoma. The propmaster, according to the Times. consulted a source in the "underworld" and came up with one from a neighboring city. (T. Times 6/1/1939, pg. 11; 6/3/1939, pg. 6; 6/6/1939, pg. 16)

On July 3, 1939, thirteen year old Joe Heitman, Jr., of 604 Carr St., took aim in front of the Turner Richards Photography Studio, 724 Pacific Ave., in this "studio portrait." The gun he was aiming seemed almost as long as he was tall. Joe, taking after his sportsman father Joe Sr., started shooting at flying clay targets about a year ago at the Tacoma Gun Club. By 1939, he was one of the best shots in the organization. In the last competition, he shot 94%, holding his own against competitors many years his senior. He also had an affinity with animals. He rode horses, was training two billy goats to pull his wagon and had a trained skunk that followed him like a dog. (T. Times 7/18/1939, pg. 13)

Real estate developer Norton Clapp towers over County Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Louise S. Taylor as the two shake hands and show off their Jubilee Hats in July of 1939. Both are members of the Gyro Club which declared the wearin' of hats to be the best way to boost the city's Golden Jubilee celebration, July 16-23, 1939. 20,000 hats of all styles, shapes and colors would flood the city so that everybody had a chance to buy one, for as low as 60 cents. The club had announced plans to put old-fashioned police wagons on the streets on July 18th to spot anyone not wearing a hat and suitable "punishment" would ensue.
