40-foot wheelhouse control console located aboard the $50 million dollar Western Offshore No. IX, a newly built self-propelled drillship moored in 1977 at the Port of Tacoma's Pier 24. Equipment manufactured by Martin-Decker Co., Santa Ana, CA. There was a helipad on top the wheelhouse for a helicopter to whisk personnel to and from shore. Martin-Decker Co. equipment aboard the newly built Western Offshore No. IX which was moored at the Port of Tacoma's Pier 24 in 1977. The 520-foot drillship had a 93-foot beam and a 200-foot derrick. It had nearly 14 miles of anchor line on 12 giant reels. No. IX was designed to drill holes up to 25,000 feet deep in water up to 750 feet deep. The drillship had room for a 120-man crew and a helipad on top of the 40-foot long wheelhouse control console that was used to transport men to and from shore. Construction project at American Lake Veterans' Hospital. Building with tiled roof is apparently in the process of having its exterior waterproofed. About 15 different construction and improvement projects were underway at the 52-year-old facility. Four years ago the hospital was used primarily as a psychiatric facility. Interior of glass store. Examples of mirrors and other framed works in glass are displayed in an Aro Glass Co. store in July of 1977. Aro Glass Co. stores in Aberdeen and Olympia were photographed on the same day. Richards Studio notes do not identify which location the above photograph represents. An advertisement which ran in September of 1977 indicated that Aro Glass was expanding to a full line glass service. Established in Tacoma in 1947, the company was well known for its quality auto glass services. (TNT ad 9-13-77, A-15)

Partial view of kitchen. AA Construction had just completed work on Marcus Calpito's kitchen in July of 1977. This view notes the abundance of wood cabinets, built-in ovens, and refrigerator with whimsical animal magnets. A 1977 calendar "Memories of Yesterday" hangs on the wall next to the door. Portrait of the Honorable Erling Tollefson, Municipal Court judge. Judge Tollefson was the youngest of the four Tollefson brothers who made their mark on Tacoma's landscape. Harold was a two-term Mayor of Tacoma, Thor, a multiple term Republican congressman and Rudy, a well known banker. Thor and Harold preceded him in admission to the bar. Erling Tollefson was born on December 13, 1913 and attended local Tacoma schools including Lincoln High School and the University of Puget Sound. He attended Gonzaga University Law School after being associated with Johnson Paint Co. for many years and passed the Washington bar exam in August of 1959. Judge and Mrs. Tollefson resided at 819 South Monroe. He would pass away on December 5, 1986. (TNT 8-16-59-article; TNT 4-30-78, C-13 article)

Oil barge. Work continues on an oil barge at Canron, Inc. (located in the old Star Iron & Steel plant), 326 Alexander Ave. in May of 1977. More than half of the work has been completed on the 40 x 165-foot oil barge destined for remote Alaskan river trading. General cargo would be loaded on topside with fuel oil in 12 tanks below deck. Canron, Inc., had received a two-month rush construction job for Venetian Iron Works. Canron, a 123-year-old Canadian firm, had been in Tacoma for about two years and had leased the old Star Iron & Steel plant in the tideflats. Town & Country Tennis Club, Inc. is shown to have two locations - one in Federal Way and the other in Gig Harbor. The complex shown above has not been identified; Town & Country advertised that it would be soon be opening the Federal Way and Puyallup locations. The Town & Country Tennis & Health Club, 10710 - 98th Ave. E., Puyallup, would not actually be constructed until 1978. Eugene M. Mushkin of Mercer Island is listed as the architect. Studio portrait of Mrs. Lucille Hurst. Mrs. Hurst, the widow of Dr. Cecil Hurst, posed for a portrait in early May of 1977. She resided at 3635 North Washington St. She, along with civic leaders Thomas Mallon and Gerrit VanderEnde, would be honored on June 9, 1977, at the annual awards banquet of the Tacoma-Pierce County chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. All three would receive the NCCJ 1977 Brotherhood Award. Mrs. Hurst was a member of the Temple Beth El and was a 40-year member of the Tacoma section, National Council of Jewish Women and served as president twice. Her many community contributions included secretary of Faith Home, charter member of the Civic Ballet Board, and secretary-treasurer of the NAACP. Photograph ordered by Lucille Hurst. Progress photograph of oil barge work occurring at Canron, Inc., 326 Alexander Ave., in the Port Industrial Yard. Canron, a 123-year-old Canadian firm, was involved in a two-month construction rush job for Venetian Iron Works of Des Moines, Iowa. Venetian had subcontracted the $270,000 job to Canron. The 40 x 165-foot steel oil barge will serve remote Alaska river communities. Canron came to Tacoma in 1975 to finish container cranes started by Star Iron & Steel. 1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. "Reflections of Downtown Tacoma" was the award-winning entry from the Downtown Tacoma Association. Six new buildings and a fountain full of daffodils made note of downtown's growth. An unidentified 4-piece band and Ms. Downtown Tacoma accompanied the float. It won the Commissioners' Trophy for best commercial float. (TNT 4-16-77, A-3 article)

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Nearing the end of the two hour parade came the float sponsored by the Concerned Christian Laymen, Inc., "Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone." 1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Governor Dixy Lee Ray served as Grand Marshall of the 1977 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Parade. Governor Ray, in brown jacket, is seated up high in a 1930 dual windshield Packard. Riding with her were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Galbraith, Dr. Harlan P. McNutt -director of DSHS, and one of Governor Ray's poodles. Tacoma was Governor Ray's hometown; she graduated from Stadium High School and had fond memories of past Daffodil festivals. 1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. The Little Wheels Quarter Midget Association's entry in the April 1977 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade was entitled "A First for Puget Sound." Tacoma would be the location of the 1977 Grand Nationals championship to be held August 8-20th. Three hopefuls for the competition are in their vehicles aboard the daffodil-covered float. The Little Wheels of Tacoma would be awarded the Princess Trophy for best float under 30'. (TNT 4-16-77, A-3 article)

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Marching briskly down Pacific Avenue in chilly 46 degree weather was this band and drill unit believed to be representing the Nanaimo branch of the Naval Sea Cadets. American and Canadian flags are borne by two marchers in the foreground while an assorted number of flagbearers with Canadian provincial flags follow the brass-and-drum band.

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Mayor and Mrs. Gordon Johnston, in a white and yellow '57 Ford Sunliner convertible, acknowledge the parade watchers on April 16, 1977. Following them is County Commissioner Clay Huntington and guests in a red and white '55 Chevy Bel Air. Although the weather was a brisk 46 degrees, rain held off and sunshine broke through during the two hour parade. 36 floats, 26 bands, 7 drill teams and 21 special units participated in the 44th annual festival.

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Commodores, pirates, clowns and royalty all sailed majestically down Pacific Avenue during the April 16, 1977, Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Parade. The blue and white float decorated with yellow daffodils was crowded with participants representing SeaFair. It would go on to win first place in the "Other Festivals" category. 1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. "A Salute to King Alfred" was the Reno Rodeo Festival float, sponsored by Del Webb's Primadonna Casino, entered in the 1977 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Parade. The white-framed Victorian garden was decorated with golden King Alfred daffodils. Five white clad women in soft summer hats, all former Daffodil queens, waved to the spectators lined up along Pacific Avenue. They were listed as: Renee Hopp (1976), Wendy Van Noy (1975), Lori Weber Durr (1974), Sherri Murrey (1973), and Jean Fink Jones (1971). (TNT 4-17-77, A-1 article)

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. "Puget Sound USA" was the L.H. Bates Vocational Technical Institute's entry in the 1977 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade. Sea gulls and a whale swimming in a blue ocean of flowers along with a lighthouse made of golden daffodils are symbols of this part of Washington. 25,000 daffodils were used on Bates' float which was awarded the President's Trophy for animation.

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. County Commissioner and Mrs. Joe Stortini greet parade watchers on April 16, 1977. They are riding in a blue-and-white 1955 Ford Fairlane convertible. Mr. Stortini had been a state legislator and longtime football coach at Mount Tahoma. In November of 1976, Mr. Stortini defeated Republican Robert Odman in the race for Pierce County Commissioner; Mr. Stortini had previously beaten incumbent George Sheridan in the primary.

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. "The 'Cord' That Ties Puget Sound To The World." McChord AFB's entry in the 1977 Grand Floral parade was bedecked with golden daffodils and mementos of familiar Washington sights including the Space Needle, St. Joseph Hospital and the Capitol Bldg. Two airmen stood at the rear of the 42-foot long float just in front of a flowered globe and American flag. Two model airplanes "flew" nearby. 60,000 daffodils were used in the creation of this award-winning float which captured the Judges' Trophy for originality. (TNT 4-16-77, A-3-article)

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. One of the smaller floats participating in the 44th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival was the entry from KTAC radio - a golf cart. Covered with golden daffodils, the cart held several men, probably employees of the radio station. It pulled a flower-bedecked unit containing a miniature van. KTAC was number 85 on the dial.

1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Purple was much in evidence in the entry from the Spokane Lilac Association. Association members wearing deep purple jackets accompanied the float which was decorated with yellow daffodils, trees and lilac-tinted blossoms. Three members of the royal court happily greet parade spectators.

Queen Debbie Crump and two princesses, wearing red apple prints, acknowledge the parade spectators. They are accompanied by several marching Apple Blossom Festival officials. 1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Riding on the back of a killer whale float and accompanied by princesses Mary Riggleman and Karon DiLoreto is Carol Glenn, 1977 Daffodil Queen from Bethel High School. Miss Glenn was the first queen chosen from her school and the first African-American to receive the honor. Her "Whale of a Float" was designed by Tacoma City Light and was decorated with 13,000 daffodils. (TNT 4-16-77, A-3 article)
