Children are coming off special runs of the Tacoma Transit Company buses to attend the Tacoma Philharmonic presentation of the Pacific Northwest Symphony at Temple Theater. This was the last of four musical performances for school children for the school year held February 18, 1948.

The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. The Marchetta Ki girls marching unit at Lincoln High School was scheduled to perform at two football games during the first weekend of November in 1948. On Friday evening, November 5 they appeared at the Bellingham - Lincoln H. S. game in the Lincoln Bowl. The next day they were part of the halftime show at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S) Homecoming game against Central Washington. Tacoma Public Schools served Thanksgiving meals to about 12,000 students with children receiving turkey, dressing and all the holiday fixings. The school cooks and their assistants were busy preparing the special meal all day. In January 1949 Annie Wright Seminary students would be traveling to Olympia where they would visit the Governor and the State government buildings. The above photograph of students enrolled in Annie Wright Seminary's lower school appeared in the 1949 Annie Wright Seminary's yearbook, the Shield. All the girls are wearing their uniforms. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. Pacific Northwest Conference Convention at CPS, Women's Society, The Methodist Church. Pacific Lutheran College "Choir of the West" with Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, Director of Music and Choir of the West Conductor. The choir wears traditional robes with a monogrammed stole. The Choir of the West toured the area and performed on the radio. They sang a classical repertoire. Prof. Malmin took over as director of the choir in 1937. Annie Wright Seminary, Junior class play for the yearbook "The Shield." For their theatrical production, the AWS juniors presented Jean Cocteau's version of the Sophocles play "Antigone." "Antigone" is the story of a young girl who defies her uncle, the King, to bury the remains of her brother. The lead roles of Antigone and Ismene were played by Heather Spence and Dorthea Weiss. The play was produced on Saturday at 8:30p.m. in Keator Hall. The main characters can be seen standing in the center of what may be the curtain call, flanked by chorus members and sword carriers. Lincoln High School band for the 1954 school yearbook The Lincolnian. The band, under the direction of Robert Dezell, played at basketball and football games. They played concerts at the middle schools and broadcast two performances on KMO. The highlight of their year was their "Bach to Pop" concert in March. (1954 Lincolnian- see yearbook for names)

Putting their best foot forward are thirteen young students from the Annie Wright Seminary. Dressed in seemingly patriotic colors, the little girls are all holding hands as they pose on the spacious grounds of the private school. The picture was taken on May 9, 1953, the occasion of May Day festivities, so the children may have been getting ready to put on a performance in front of the Queen, her court, alumnae and other guests.

Queen and her court. Annie Wright Seminary annually celebrated May Day festivities on the school's lawns. Erin Lombard of Yakima, seated with scepter, was the 1953 Queen of May. She and her court posed for a large group portrait on May 9, 1953. The little girls in white in the front row are from the kindergarten glass; they would act as heralds, flower girls, crown, scepter and train bearers. The older girls are members of the senior class and would serve as attendants to Queen Erin and her maid of honor, junior Marilyn Wotton of Puyallup. Third graders move in precision as they dance around the traditional May Pole in 1953 May Day festivities outside the ivy-covered halls of the Annie Wright Seminary. The May Queen, Erin Lombard, and her court and other spectators watch the intricate weaving. It had long been the custom to have the third grade class present the May Pole dance. Not only was a queen crowned in May Day festivities at Annie Wright Seminary, but guests and students were entertained by various musical programs. In 1953, a program of modern dance was presented under the direction of Nancy Jane Bare. These girls, dressed in costumes of America's pioneering past, may have been in the Middle School.

Several couples dance under a ceiling draped with crepe paper and balloons at the hop presented by the freshmen and sophomores annually for the upper grades at Annie Wright Seminary. This year's theme was an "Evening in Paris". Some of the girls have their dance cards strapped around their wrists.

Charles Wright School students are building a snow man and having a snowball fight at Annie Wright Seminary in January of 1952. The newly fallen snow has outlined the branches of trees and covered the ground. The Charles Wright School had been added as an annex to Annie Wright two years prior so that brothers of Annie Wright pupils could have a place to attend after the 1949 earthquake severely damaged Lowell School. There were seventeen boys in the Charles Wright class in 1952. In 1957 the Charles Wright Academy would be created on a 127-acre site near University Place. (1952 Shield)

School children are enjoying using the library at Jennie Reed School. The new school was opened in 1951 and an addition was completed in 1952.

Portable classrooms were in use at Franklin School. Seventeen students are working at their desks while the teacher and six more children are in a circle at the front of the room. One of the boys near the center of the photogrpah is wearing a cub scout uniform. An addition was built at Franklin School in 1953.

The exterior of the chapel in Pacific Lutheran College's new chapel-music-speech building. A rose window decorates the facade over the main entrance to the building. The spire rises high above the roofline. Designed by architect John Richards, the building with its brick exterior blended well with the other college buildings.

Visitation School's 1952 graduating Class of 42 students taken in church sanctuary. Visitation Church was designed by C. Frank Mahon, Architect, and constructed in 1913. The school was added in 1925 and opened on September 8th with an enrollment of 170 students, at a cost of $1.00 per month for in parrish families. The school was staffed by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Benedict's Convent in Minnesota. ("A History of Pierce County" V. 3)
