Cheney Lumber Mills could be found throughout Washington, Oregon and California. The Tacoma plant had a sawmill, dry kiln, planning mill, log sorting area, storage facilities and loading areas. Cheney Lumber Co. was founded by Ben B. Cheney. Ben Cheney, although a well respected lumberman and a pioneer in his field, is also known for his interest in sports. The Cheney Stud teams participated in baseball, football, soccer and basketball. Ben Cheney was instrumental in bringing the Pacific Coast Baseball League to Tacoma and the Tacoma Cheney Stadium was named in his honor. Precision Builders homes met the specifications of the Federal Housing Administration. The foundations were made out of plywood, they had wood framed panel units and the exteriors were Douglas Fir Plyscord. They offered three bedroom houses with or without basements and garages. Rainbow Convention. The Pierce County Rainbow Girls were hostesses to the 21st annual session of the Grand Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for girls which was held June 22, 23, and 24, 1947. Over 1,500 young ladies from Washington, Idaho, and Alaska attended. Several drill teams performed. The winning teams were announced on the afternoon of the last day. Eighteen young women cadets form a V-shaped formation. The young woman on the far right is wearing an all-white uniform. (T.Times, 6/23/1947, p.1)

Tacoma Times Carrier's were rewarded with a train trip to the Snoqualmie Ski Bowl in the winter of 1947. Over 300 carrier-salesmen, 32 parents and 12 school teachers and nurses boarded a Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific train to Snoqualmie for a fun-filled weekend. The carriers were rewarded for their courteous service and increase in paper deliveries on their routes (T. Times, 1/27/47, p. 1, 16).

Knights Templar. The Masons held a parade from the Masonic Temple to First Christian Church the day before the opening of their annual state convention on May 12, 1947. Hundreds of delegates were in Tacoma for the 60th conclave of the Grand Commandery. The parade included the Seattle Commandery band. (T.Times, 5/9/1947, p.1)

On a sunny day in May, 1947, Louise Kepper, a senior at the College of Puget Sound, stops to admire the "Kissing Posts" taken from the campus of Pacific Lutheran University by students of the College of Puget Sound. The CPS students set the posts, engraved with initials on every surface, in cement. CPS students were posted to guard their color posts from possible PLC "raiders". (T.Times, 5/5/1947, p.14)

The Tacoma Totem Pole was built in 1903 by two carvers from Alaska. The pole was originally a 105 foot cedar tree trunk, donated by the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Company, and now stands close to 80 feet tall. The totem pole was commissioned by William Sheard, hunter, and Chester Thorne, a prominent banker. The Tacoma Totem Pole was known as "The Largest in the World". The Wright Building at the corner of 9th and Pacific was one of the first buildings in Tacoma to be spruced up during the Tacoma "clean-up campaign" started in April of 1947. City officials felt that two major benefits would be gained by business owners who participated in the campaign: greater safety by removing fire hazards, and greater business volume through improving the appearance of Tacoma's stores. Built in 1884, the Wright Building was demolished in October of 1969. (T. Times, 4/3/47, p. 1). TPL-8830

Pantorium Cleaners & Dyers at 3306 Tacoma Avenue South was one of five dry cleaning and laundry services operated by the Home Service Laundry Company. Pantorium had domestic and commercial accounts throughout Tacoma. Besides apparel , the laundry specialized in cleaning drapes, curtains, carpets, rugs and upholstery.
