Lonesome pole cat (skunk) at the City pound. Hundreds of people wanted to own the skunk held at the City pound, shown here with patrolman Roscoe Savage on July 29, 1947. The small, de-odorized skunk was taken into custody when he wandered into a grocery store. The City attorneys searched for a legal precedent to determine who should receive it. The skunk was middle-aged and showed signs of being well cared for. Dozens of people claimed ownership and many others wanted to adopt him. As of July 30, 1947, the City decided that if no legal owner came forth the animal would be auctioned. Three veterans enjoy each other's company. The Veterans of the Spanish American War, Department of Washington and Alaska, National Auxiliary, held their 46th annual department encampment July 17, 18 and 19, 1947, in Tacoma. The headquarters for the group was the Hotel Winthrop. 600 delegates from the 25 auxiliaries were expected from throughout Washington and British Columbia .L-R, first man is unknown, Whit H. West Coast Grocery, Charles Hyde. Olympia Branch. The grocery warehouse, facing north, was located on the SW corner of Chestnut and Legion Way in Olympia. The building was made of concrete and had an office entrance in the center, flanked by shipping and receiving departments. The 1947 Sanborn map also indicated there was a railroad spur adjacent along Chestnut. (Additional information provided by a reader)

Tomatoes are moved along a conveyor system and packed into card board trays and then wrapped in celophane ready to be placed in wooden shipping crates. Scottish Rite reunion, Mr. Farnsworth. Scottish Rite bodies of Freemasonry in the Tacoma district held their 84th semi-annual reunion the week of May 16, 1948, and dedicated it to the memory of the late Felix Robinson, 33rd degree, in appreciation for his 27 years of activity in the Masonic order. Over 100 petitioners were expected to form the reunion class for the ritualistic induction. The Scottish Rite of the Freemasons appears to have been organized in the United States in 1801. It offers higher Degrees to a Master Mason (the third and highest of the traditional degrees, and as far as he can go in his Blue Lodge). The Scottish Rite is open to Jews and others. Interior of Fur Storage at Division and Tacoma Avenue, Llewellyn Advertising Agency, Mr. VanMeter. The Supreme Fur Storage facility opened in April 1948. Richfield Gas Company opened a service station at this location in 1928. Kress Retail Drive Inn was located here in 1938, and Five Point Inn from 1945 through 1947. The building takes advantage of the triangular property it sits on at the intersection of Division and Tacoma Avenue North.

Furniture Department at Weisfield & Goldberg, Virginia Knowlen. After several months of remodeling Weisfield & Goldberg's officially opened their new furniture department, five floors containing every type of furniture and home furnishings of nationally advertised brands. Copy of architect's drawing of scientific research and library center building at Western State Hospital, Times, Buzz. Bids for construction of this facility proposed for a research center at Western State Hospital for the study of diseases affecting the nerves and brain would be called by the middle of March 1948. The cost was estimated between $300,000 - $400,000. The center was to work in conjunction with the new medical research school at the University of Washington. Heath, Gove and Bell Architects had offices at 1119 Pacific Avenue, Room 1611-12. Jack Ballew was Director at Western State Hospital at this time and W.N. Keller, M.S. was Superintendent. This aerial view of downtown Tacoma, taken in May of 1948, shows the city looking up 9th Street from the railroad tracks that line the waterfront to Tacoma Avenue. Prominent in the foreground is the parking lot located at the former location of the Tacoma Hotel, 913 A Street. The hotel occupied the site from 1884 until it was destroyed by fire in 1935. In 1988, the Frank Russell Co. built their offices at this location. Left of the parking lot on A St. were (l to r): the Tacoma Building (1017-21 A St.), the Lawrence Block (1009-15 A St.- demolished) and the Mason Block (1001-07 A St.- demolished.) The Weyerhaeuser Building (1015 A St.) now occupies the site of the demolished buildings. Also shown is the Hotel Winthrop (773 Broadway) across 9th St. from the Pantages Theater (902 Broadway). The Tacoma Theater (902-14 Broadway) can be seen behind the Pantages and the Medical Arts building (747 Market- now the Tacoma Municipal Building) can be seen beyond the Winthrop. Branham Healing Campaign was having a three day miracle healing session at the Tacoma Ice Palace. Churches throughout Tacoma were participating in this event. The sessions took place on Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday from 2:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Pearl Gunn, a teller at Bank of California was held up by a man she described as "tall, dark, very handsome, well dressed, cool and calm". The man approached her window with a large manila envelope, he was holding what appeared to be a gun with a blue and white bandana over it, and asked her to fill it with money. The good looking criminal left with $1500 in $5's, $1500 in $10's, $3400 in $20's, $1000 in $50's and $1000 in $100's totaling $8400. Pearl Gunn stated she was petrified about the incident (T. Times, 5/6/48, p. 1).

Tacoma Mayor C. Val Fawcett is congratulating Clare Bowe, Miss Tacoma 1948; Miss Tacoma was sponsored by the Tacoma Junior Chamber of Commerce. Clare Bowe is a music student at College of Puget Sound, she will compete against 23 other women for the Miss Washington Title. Bowe will travel via train, to Ephrata, Washington for the competition. The winner of the Miss Washington contest will receive prizes and scholarships and will compete in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City (T. Times, 6/23/48, p. 1).

View of "Jimmy M" a 48 foot steel troller built by Birchfield Boiler Inc. "Jimmy M" was designed by the Edwin Monk naval architecture firm, Edwin Monk and Lorne Garden were the chief architects. Edwin Monk company designed pleasure and commercial vessels for different boat building companies throughout the Pacific Coast. Photo ordered by June H. In June of 1948 the Tacoma Boat Building Company completed work on the "Scarlet Queen" which they declared the largest tuna clipper in the world. Measuring 165 feet in length and 34 feet wide, the fishing vessel was converted from a decommissioned Navy ship. When launched the tuna clipper had an 1800 horsepower "Fairbanks Morse" diesel motor, a 10 cylinder opposed piston job with 20 pistons, and 20 refrigeration tanks with the capacity of 600 tons of tuna. When the "Scarlet Queen" was launched for a trial run she had about 150 guests on board. (T. Times, 6/14/48, p. 1; TNT, 10/3/1948, p.C-11). TPL-8958
