On April 18, 1975, ground was finally broken for Tacoma's civic center, the Bicentennial Pavilion, located downtown at 1313 Market St. Various dignitaries addressed the crowd of approximately 200, many of whom accepted a general invitation to turn over a symbolic shovelful of dirt. 1975 color Richards stock footage. Mayor Gordon N. Johnston and 10-year-old Mark Mackenroth are prepared to dig deep during groundbreaking ceremonies for the new civic center, the Bicentennial Pavilion, in April of 1975. Mark was chosen to represent future generations who would use the Pavilion. Tacoma had long sought a convention center to hold large-scale meetings, concerts and banquets. It would open the following year in June.

This is possibly 13th St. with the Sears department store building in the background. They would be participating in the groundbreaking ceremonies for the long-awaited Bicentennial Pavilion to be built at 1313 Market St.

1975 Richards color stock footage. This gentleman in a plaid cape appears to have selected the shovel he wants from a circle of red-banded ones already dug into the ground. Two other men behind him have yet to decide on theirs. Bystanders and passersby at the April 18, 1975, groundbreaking ceremonies for the downtown Bicentennial Pavilion were invited to participate in the symbolic digging. Some enjoyed it so much they wanted to take home the shovels as souvenirs; that idea was squashed since the shovels belonged to the Department of Public Works. (TNT 4-19-75, A-3-article)

1975 Daffodil Festival Parade. Two teams of horses pull a replica of an old fashioned Conestoga wagon down Pacific Avenue on April 12, 1975, during the 42nd annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade. A similar wagon, if not this particular one, would be Washington State's entry in the Bicentennial Wagon Train Pilgrimage to Pennsylvania in 1976. It was a fitting reminder of the parade's theme - "Remember When."

1975 Daffodil Festival Parade. This Lakewood Summer Festival entry was one of the 34 floats enjoyed by parade spectators during the 42nd annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade. The cheerful display of this multi-part float incorporating bright goldens, pinks, reds and pure whites in summer suns added to the overall sunny day. The float won the best festival award for the 1975 parade.

1975 Daffodil Festival Parade. Traveling from Vancouver, B.C., was the entry from the Pacific National Exhibition entitled "Pageant of the Pacific." A small orca leaps among the rolling waves while two women wave to the throngs lining Pacific Avenue. An "ancient" vessel with sails is mid-center on the float. The PNE float won second place in "Towns over 5000" category.

Head-and-shoulders portrait of Judge Thomas A. Swayze, Jr. Judge Swayze represented the 26th District in the Washington State House of Representatives for several years, following in the footsteps of his mother, Frances. He became Speaker of the House in 1971 and 1972. While Speaker, he played an important role in the redistricting negotiations which occurred during the 1972 session. Thomas Swayze retired from the legislature in 1973; in 1975 he joined the Pierce County Superior Court bench where he remained for 21 years. While on the Superior Court, he was the presiding judge, president of the Superior Court Judges' Association and board member of the judges' foundation. Judge Swayze passed away on October 16, 2005, at the age of 74. Photograph ordered by the Pierce County Law Library. On March 27, 1975, several aerial photographs were taken by the Richards Studio of the area between 320th in Federal Way, North Puyallup, Pacific Highway South and Valley Ave. for Puget Sound National Bank. Most of the series shown the abundance of wooded areas and undeveloped property with smaller neighborhoods scattered on the landscape. The aerials also noted the many roadways, including freeways, in the area.

Aerial view of lake believed to be Trout Lake. According to the Washington State Place Names database, this is possibly Trout Lake, located in southwest King County. The lake is a large one, approximately 18.1 acres, and is also known as Jovita Lake . Photograph ordered by Puget Sound National Bank and taken on March 27, 1975.

A series of aerial photographs were taken on March 27, 1975, on behalf of Puget Sound National Bank of the area between 320th in Federal Way, North Puyallup, Pacific Highway South and Valley Ave. The purpose for the photographs was not expressed in Richard studio notes but it is possible that the bank was preparing for the later acquisition of banks in the vicinity.

The Richards Studio photograph took a series of photographs of the area between 320th in Federal Way, North Puyallup, Pacific Highway South and Valley Ave. on March 27, 1975, for Puget Sound National Bank. The I-5 freeway runs at the bottom of the photograph. State Route 18 is toward the top. This is also a closer view of the Weyerhaeuser Corporation's headquarters which were built in 1971 in Federal Way. Previously the company had been based in Tacoma. Weyerhaeuser would celebrate its 100th annivesary in January of 2000.
