--Freeway Model Displayed--
A 40-foot model of the Tacoma Freeway as it will appear when completed in several years is being displayed this month on the second floor of the county-City Building. Picture shows freeway running east to and over the Puyallup River. G. M. Schuster, city public works director, front right, points to state approach to city's projected Yakima Avenue Bridge. Under his arm are Delin Avenue and Tacoma Avenue undercrossings. Behind Schuster are Harold A. Hagestad, left, coordinating engineer between Tacoma and state, and Myron Calkins, city engineer. They are pointing to the complex of crossings and approaches that will be the Pacific Avenue Interchange, designed to relieve Freeway of Cross-town traffic congestion.

Part of Virna Haffer Collection
ca. 1960. This self portrait of photographer Virna Haffer was made circa 1960. Apparently she had greased her face with vasoline and then patted her face with paper. Her profile emerges from a black background with eyes seemingly shut tightly. (Virna Haffer Collection) (Bullock: A Turbulent Lens, p. 40)

Maintained by the State General Services in cooperation with the federal GSA, it supplies western Washington state institutions and welfare programs with food. About 45 box cars a month move through the single warehouse.

Freeway Dedication Site
Road-opening ceremonies, featuring a military review of America's latest Field Artillery rocketry, will be conducted on Wednesday, October 13 for the new 13.5 mile, $15 million Tacoma-Midway Freeway. Site of the ceremonies is the Auburn Interchange shown in the attached photograph. The Field Artillery units, part of the 4th Infantry Division Artillery from Fort Lewis, will assemble in the northbound lanes (marked "D" in the picture) beginning at 10:00 a.m. Visitors and spectators wishing to view the ceremonies will be permitted to park on the roadway in the areas designated "B" (southbound from Seattle) and "C" (northbound from Tacoma). Route of the military parade is shown as a series of arrows, starting at the assembly area and passing through the cloverleaf interchange from the northbound lanes onto the southbound lanes and past the reviewing stand.
