The health science instructors at Lincoln High School were teaching a progressive curriculum in March 1960. Students were exploring the nutritional benefits of algae years before the current craze for "health" foods. Two Lincoln students pose with a plate of freshly baked algae cookies. Members of the Tacoma High School faculty and the senior class, class of 1900, posed on the porch and steps of the school then located at 714 Tacoma Avenue South. The site was the former location of the Washington College, private school for boys. Two students have been identified in the photograph: George (or Georgia) Armstrong and Roy Knapp. Roy Knapp is seated in the second row of steps, second from left, next to an unidentified female. He was the business manager in 1899-1900 for the "Tahoma," the monthly publication of the Tacoma High School students and would pass away in 1906. Two cadets sit on the step railings. They are holding their distinctive hats and appear to be wearing similar clothing, i.e. uniforms. Cadets would participate in drills and would have an armory prepared for their use. Fern Hill School. Softball team. In 1940 the Fern Hill School softball team were the winners of the city elementary school title. They beat both the top seed Rogers and Sherman Elementary. As identified by the Tacoma Times newspaper, the champs are: (first row, left to right) Harold Wilcher, Robert Moody, pitcher David Strandley, George Stephenson and Donald Lnag (possibly a typo by newspaper). In March of 1940, Stadium High School presented their 28th annual opera "Desert Song." The 200 students in the cast rehearsed three months to perform the light opera March 28-30. The lead was played by Donna Mae Jaden, who later achieved fame as musical and film star Janis Paige. Lincoln High School. Lincoln Park High School opened August 31, 1914, built from a design by Heath and Gove, Architects. It was built of local Wilkeson stone and precision brick. In 1917, the school became Lincoln High School. (T. Times)

Halfback Harry Harper has a firm grip on the football in this November 1, 1955, photograph. Harper, of Lincoln High School, was a "clutch" player known for his hard running, jarring blocking and alert defense. He scored 10 touchdowns his senior year and was named to the All-Capitol League first team. He was also honored by the Tacoma Lions Club with their second annual "Outstanding Player" award. He was an instrumental part in Lincoln's 19-0 victory over Stadium on Thanksgiving Day 1955. (1956 Lincolnian yearbook, p. 50, p. 53-54)

Lincoln suffered only one loss in the 1955 season which was to the co-titlist Olympia High School Bears. Jim E. Jones also served as the manager of the varsity track team. Bob Keister appears to be preparing to punt as the Lincoln High School sophomore practices with his varsity teammates on November 1, 1955. Besides lettering in football, Keister also was on the successful Sophomore Blacks basketball team and on the Reserve baseball roster. By the time his career concluded at Lincoln, Keister also lettered in varsity baseball as a pitcher and served as Hi-Y president. Royal Magnus takes a stance as the letterman prepares for another season of Lincoln football. Lincoln had another successful year as it rebounded from losing all but three first-stringers to winning the City Title and splitting the Capitol League crown with Olympia High School. Eleven members of the Lincoln High School Student Council posed with a large banner on September 9, 1955, urging their classmates to demonstrate their school spirit by purchasing ASB cards for a mere $5.50. These activity cards helped support athletic events, dances, the Lincolnian Newspaper and the Lincolnian yearbook. Lincoln students bought more cards than their Stadium counterparts. As a result Stadium H.S. had to present an assembly on Lincoln's campus in payment for losing the contest. Champion 1940 Fife High School Trojan basketball team with Coach Bill Vinson on far right. In 1940, the team won its second successive Pierce County League hoop title. They had won 22 consecutive games since January 13, 1939, 11 of them in 1940. In 1939, the Fife basketball team had its first title win since 1931. The team won 13 of 14 league games to win the title. This also made Bill Vinson the most winning coach in the league, bringing home the titles in football, basketball, baseball and track in 1939. From the writing on the blackboard, this night school class appears to be hard at work studying their prefixes. In October of 1939 over 1,700 adults took part in over 60 classes offered at Lincoln High School on Monday and Thursday nights. One of the purposes of the night school program was to help adult students catch up on basic educational tools, such as reading, writing and basic arithmetic. State Champion Fife High School Trojans tumble to the ground in a heap in this November 1939 portrait. The victorious Trojans won the State Class B Football Championship with a 7-0 victory over the favored Poulsbo Vikings. At the top of the pyramid is Pete Mello. Directly below are Pete Cereghino, Frank Spear and Milton Iida. 3rd Row: Seiichi Yamada, Bob Vinson and Frank Evancich. 4th Row: Kenji Yaguchi, Masaru Tamura, Yohei Sagami and Joe Trucco. Bottom row: Howard Bryan, Willie Haminishi, Tom Pruett and Ben Holdner. The Trojans, under the direction of Coach Bill Vinson, had a 10 game unbeaten season, and were the state's highest scoring team, scoring 328 points to their opponents' 19.
