College of Puget Sound Board of Trustees in front of Howarth Hall in May of 1938. Group of 13 men, 1 woman photographed in front of building. The building was constructed in 1927 as the college's science building and was designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects. It was re-dedicated in 1932 and named in memory of the late Leonard Howarth.

The Pacific Lutheran College 1938 May Day Queen Alice Cook and her court pose in front of a brick building at the school. The royalty, left to right, are unidentified, Doris Hovey, Aagot Gerden, Eugenia Spencer, Queen Alice, Enid Blake, Ruth Downton, Caroline Hoff and unidentified. The unidentified young women are probably the high school court members Barbara Xavier and Priscilla Preus. The children standing in front are, left to right, Marianna Van Rooy, Gail Taylor, Grover Akre and Connie Hanson. The court attendants wore pastel gowns of blue, peach, blue-green and green. Queen Alice wore white silk with grosgrain ribbon defining the skirt. Her bouquet was of lavender stock and spring flowers. The attendants carried carnations and sweet peas. (T. At the May 5, 1938 opener of the Tacoma Tigers season, Mayor George Smitley throws out the first ball. Over 6,000 fans turned out to watch the defending champion Tigers meet the team from Yakima. In 1937, organized baseball had returned to Tacoma after a 15 year absence.

Three boys relax and clown, ready for the 1938 Tacoma Tigers season opening game. In 1937, organized baseball had returned to Tacoma after a 15 year absence. Over 6,000 fans poured into the stands to support their local 1937 Western International League champions, the Tacoma Tigers.

Bellarmine Cadet Exercises. In the foreground are four JROTC students with flags, two military officers and a civilian while others look on. The cadet exercises occurred on May 5, 1938 at Bellarmine High School. Also on that date promotions in the ROTC unit were announced, ranging from privates first class to cadet captains. The May 5, 1938 hometown debut of the Tacoma Tigers at the Tacoma Athletic Park. A record capacity crowd of 6,000 fans crams into the bleachers, spilling out onto the infield. Despite all of the enthusiasm, the Tigers, defending champions, lost to Yakima 8 to 7.

Tacoma is treated to a parade on May 6, 1938 when Knights Templar from all over the state gathered here for the 51st Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Washington. Unit of marching men in traditional dress uniforms with swords and plumed hats parade up 13th Street and turn north on Broadway.

Sam Perkins, seated on the right, and three other men pose for a portrait to celebrate Perkin's 73rd birthday. The event was held at the Tacoma Club in the Washington Building. Mr. Perkins had a long and varied work history in Tacoma. Sam Perkins and W.P. Bonney were partners in a wholesale and retail drug business in the late 1880s- 1890s. They went out of business in the depression of the early 90's when customers dried up. Mr. Perkins became the secretary of Mark Hanna, chairman of the Republican election committee for William McKinley. After the election, Perkins stayed on with Hanna for a while. Mr. Perkins returned to Tacoma in the late 90's as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. His party at the Tacoma Club was attended by over 100 of his friends and business associates. (T. Dinner at Tacoma Club for 73rd birthday of Sydney Albert "Sam" Perkins, local tycoon and former newspaper editor. The dinner was attended by over 100 of Mr. Perkins's friends and business associates. During his 50 years in Tacoma, he had served as the partner of W.P. Bonney in a wholesale and retail drug business, in Washington D.C. as the secretary of Mark Hanna and as owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News.

Sam Perkins celebrates his 73rd birthday with friends at the Tacoma Club. Mayor Smitley (far right) and another man sing happy birthday as he prepares to blow out the candles on his huge cake. Mr. Perkins was born in Boston on May 6, 1865 and was christened Sidney Albert Perkins. That moniker was soon shortened to "Sam." For his 73rd birthday, he was feted by some of the friends he made in over 50 years of business in Tacoma. Mr. Perkins was best known locally as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. (T.
