On March 14, 1966 Lisa Long calmly held a three-year-old alligator as she prepared to put it into the tiled pool located at the foot of the winding staircase next to the Bon Marche in the Tacoma Mall. The reptile was "dressed" in a small, hand-knitted red turtleneck sweater; his mouth was tied shut with thin cord. The alligator was the new mascot for the local Heart Fund Drive and was to remain in the pool for one week. Lisa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Long of Tacoma, had undergone open heart surgery the previous year at Mary Bridge. All coins tossed by wishmakers into the pool were to be given to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. The pool was eventually eliminated when the Mall was remodeled some years later. ca. 1890. Copy of customer print. Sepia portrait of J.B. (Jesse) Sutton, first president of Puget Sound National Bank. Pulling up stakes from Quincy, Michigan, the 62-year-old banker arrived in the "fastest-growing town on the Pacific Coast" in 1890. By the late 1880's, Tacoma was home to six national banks and six state and private banks. Sutton was to add one more, the Puget Sound Savings Bank which incorporated on May 8, 1890. He led the bank through the slowing Tacoma economy in the early 1890's and survived the bank closures that affected many Tacoma banks after the 1893 stock market panic. Sutton passed away in 1904. Prior to his death, the board of directors commended him for his "conservatism, good judgement (sic) and high sense of honor" that led the bank during the "stormy period of the great financial crisis of 1893, and establishing it firmly in the confidence of the people which it enjoys today." Puget Sound Savings Bank would evolve into the Puget Sound National Bank which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1965. (Provorse: Banking on Independence)

ca. 1966. Copy of customer's print. Closer aerial view of the new Tacoma Mall Shopping Center ca. 1966. The Tacoma Mall had expanded to 70 stores when it opened officially in October, 1965. It touted the 7000+ parking spots available to shoppers without charge and this ca. 1966 photograph indicates that thousands would take advantage of the easy parking and climate-controlled enclosed mall. Downtown merchants and officials would try to counter with ads remarking on the variety of choices a downtown shopper would have with competition keeping prices reasonable and meter maids were even putting extra nickels into parking meters to give customers a bit more time to shop. Still, the lure of the modern roofed mall would be hard to resist for thousands of shoppers from Olympia to Seattle. View of expanded Tacoma Mall with Bon Marche on center right, J.C. Penney's in center left, National Bank of Washington circular bank building at lower left. Nordstrom-Best would be the next large company to join the mall, opening in August, 1966.
