January, 1969, view of new canopy manufactured by Smith Built Campers & Canopies of 14606 Pacific Avenue in the Spanaway area. The Chevy truck and canopy were believed to be owned by Pacific Northwest Bell. Linemen would have a place to camp out comfortably if forced to spend several days out fixing telephone problems. VIP party. The massive banking hall of the Bank of California was filled with people on January 18, 1969, as they enjoyed cocktails and catered buffet dining. Army personnel could choose from cold and hot snacks at the built-in vending machines at Fort Lewis in January of 1969. Milk, sodas and ice cream were located nearer the right wall and soups and dry snacks on the left. Bright red chairs coupled with turquoise tables provided a cheery atmosphere in which to dine. Pictured under the basketball nets at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on January 15, 1969, is four-year-old Suzy Jo who is being held by Mrs. Marguerite Cousins, director of the Hilltop Day Care Training Center for Mentally Retarded Children. Suzy, a student at the center, and Mrs. Cousins jointly hold a basketball. They are joined by Mel Jackson, associate director of the Hilltop Multi-Service Center (L), and Al Roberts, UPS co-chairman of an upcoming charity match between the University of Puget Sound Loggers and the University of Alaska. Ticket sales for the February 1st game would benefit the "kids on the hill" enrolled in the learning center. A followup story in a January, 1970, News Tribune indicated that proceeds totaling approximately $3000 were raised for the day care center by the 1969 game. Several local firms stepped forward to buy blocks of tickets to distribute to Hilltop youngsters, allowing nearly 1,000 children to view a collegiate basketball game, many for the first time. Small children are just finishing up their milk and snacks at the Hilltop Day Care Training Center for Mentally Retarded Children on January 15, 1969. Three adults help the children clean up after their meal. The center was recently opened in October of 1968 at the Trinity United Presbyterian property on 6th & Grant. Four children wait in line in order to enjoy Darigold milk and a pastry snack on January 15, 1969. A lunchroom worker holds a carton of milk while another woman prepares to pour milk from a pitcher. This photograph is believed to have been taken at Jennie Reed Elementary School, where the Tacoma School District had recently begun offering breakfast for a mere nickel. School children would thus have the basis for a good start to the school day. The Tri-Mart Multi-Service helped to coordinate the volunteer service of primarily mothers who helped to serve and tidy up after the children were done eating. Four-year-old Suzy Jo, a student at the Hilltop Day Care Training Center for Mentally Retarded Children, has her eyes fixed on the bouncing ball while three adults kneel behind her in the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on January 15, 1969. Mel Jackson, associate director of the Hilltop Multi-Service Center, jubilantly holds aloft two fund raising tickets to the upcoming UPS-University of Alaska basketball game to be held on February 1, 1969, at the Fieldhouse. Next to Mr. Jackson are Al Roberts, UPS co-chairman of the upcoming charity event, and Mrs. Marguerite Cousins, director of the training center. Proceeds from the benefit match would go to the help students at the learning center. The following year would see the nationally-ranked cagers from UPS play California's University of Redlands, with ticket sales directed once more to the learning center. Group portrait of barbershop quartet. The "Most Happy Fellows" were ready to entertain customers at Steve's Gay '90s in January of 1969. Garbed in derbys, shiny vests and bow ties, Bill Dergan, Robert Hodge, Bill Thurmon and Ken Hawkinson (perhaps not in order) prepare to belt out tunes of olden days. To complete their wardrobes, the men even wore the ruffled shirts, garters and spats of old-time entertainers. Photograph ordered by Steve's Gay '90s.

The group was composed of Bill Dergan, Robert Hodge, Bill Thurmon and Ken Hawkinson (not in any particular order). Sister Roger's class at Holy Rosary School practiced the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics method on January 14, 1969 to improve their critical reading skills. Following the rules of Evelyn Wood's methods, the students, all dressed in school uniforms, use their fingertips as they read the assigned pages in their textbooks. Miss Shannon, instructor, is shown assisting a student near the blackboard. Some of the students have been identified : second row from the right, third seat back was Jonathan White followed by Karen Faker and Judy Good. Third row from right: Patty Boyle, Dave Kotas, Bridget Bannon, Tim Miller and Debra Buralli. At extreme right were Tom Olson, Mary Gassetti (sp), Janet Jackson, unidentified, unidentified, Robert Rooney, Russel Kitchen. According to a former student, a short movie was made showing the pupils utilizing newly acquired reading skills. Four men conduct a discussion on January 14, 1969, at Clover Park Vocational-Technical School while the school's station, KPEC-TV, Channel 56, films for broadcast. The man with clipboard in lap and sitting apart from the other three is apparently the moderator. The educational television station would soon receive a $10,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that would enable it to broadcast several times a week from areas outside the studio. In January of 1969, Paul Herlinger, seated right with clipboard in lap, interviewed three unidentified men for one of the public service programs produced at KPEC-TV, Channel 56. KPEC was the educational television station at the Clover Park Vocational Technical Institute, located at 4500 Steilacoom Blvd. SW in Lakewood. In 1967, Mr. Herlinger had resigned his position as public affairs director at KTNT-TV to become production manager as KPEC. He later was a production manager and executive producer at KCPQ-TV. In 1982, he began working full time narrating and announcing. KPEC-TV was created in 1960. In 1963, a fire destroyed the television building. Only three months later, the station resumed operations from an interim structure while a new station was constructed. Photograph ordered by the Tacoma-Pierce County Opportunity & Development, Inc. Operating room, Columbia Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Homer Webb, DVM, owned and operated the Columbia Veterinary Clinic at 5916 Sixth Ave. Dr. Webb, who had studied both at the University of Puget Sound and Washington State University, had a very modern facility. His operating room was equipped with a stainless steel examining table, diagnostic equipment including high intensity lighting, ample cabinets, a sink, and medical supplies. Dr. Webb also had a clinic in The Dalles, Oregon, where he had practiced for 18 years. (TNT ad 1-12-69, B-17)

Waiting room, Columbia Veterinary Clinic. Built by Kew Construction, the Columbia Veterinary Clinic, 5916 Sixth Ave., was recently opened for business. It was owned and operated by Dr. Homer Webb, DVM. Dr. Webb had studied at the University of Puget Sound and obtained a degree in veterinary medicine from Washington State University. A look at the clinic's waiting room on January 9, 1969, shows two comfortable modern couches, a receptionist's desk, an array of plants, and abundant frosted windows. (TNT ad 1-12-69, B-17)

Adelphian Choir. The University of Puget Sound's 42-voice Adelphian Choir posed for a group portrait in the campus' Kilworth Memorial Chapel on January 8, 1969. The Adelphians were led by Dr. Bruce Rodgers; Dr. Rodgers had founded the group and was the director of the University of Puget Sound's School of Music. 11-year-old Lynn Hansen was photographed on January 7, 1969 wearing a modern, miniature hearing aid, which is being held by Mary Ann Truitt, executive director of Senior Centers, Inc. . Senior citizen A.T. (Skipper) Dellplain, at far right, who was also hearing impaired, got the Senior Center located at 923 North 13th Street to sponsor the hearing aid for Lynn. He then invited Lynn and her mother, Mrs. Karl N. Hansen, to lunch at the senior center were Lynn received her hearing aid. Left to right are Mrs. Hansen, Lynn, a kneeling Mary Ann Truitt, and Mr. Dellplain. The Senior Center was in a building which had previously been a fire station. Fire scene at the Monte Vista Guitar Shop; view of damaged guitars and stereo equipment. Owner Beni Benedetti was seriously injured with burns on Friday morning, January 3, 1969, when fire gutted his Monte Vista Guitar Shop, 8324 South Tacoma Way. Benedetti's wife and son were in the building at the time of the fire but they escaped unharmed. All six Lakewood-area fire trucks rushed to the scene where an explosion had occurred, followed by the devastating fire. Fire scene at the Monte Vista Guitar Shop. All that is left in the fire-gutted Monte Vista Guitar Shop is a tangled mess of musical instruments and equipment. An explosion followed by fire on January 3, 1969, demolished the entire front of the shop, located at 8324 South Tacoma Way, propelling debris, glass, and assorted musical instruments into the street. The building was fully engulfed when firefighters from six Lakewood-area trucks arrived and could not be saved. Shop owner Beni Benedetti was seriously injured with burns on his face and hands. ca. 1969. 1969 Richards stock footage. Aerial look at the Glacier Sand & Gravel Co. operations in 1969. Several cone-shaped mounds of sand and/or gravel are positioned in a semi-circle at the Glacier Sand & Gravel site on Taylor Way. The sand and gravel could be delivered to the plant by either barge as the site fronted the Hylebos Waterway or by railroad cars and consequently transported out the same way.
