Easter at the churches. The First Congregational Church, 209 South J St., is decorated with lilies and other flowers for Easter in April of 1938. This dimly lit view of the church's interior shows the choir singing for an appreciate audience from below the massive pipe organ where a floral cross has been placed. The 1938 softball team at Holy Rosary School, 502 So. 30th St., won the city parochial school championship for the second consecutive year. They won 10 of their 12 scheduled games. To get to the top, they defeated St. Leo's 2 times, Visitation 3 times, Sacred Heart 2 times and St. Patricks 3 times. Group portrait of the one hundred voice men's choir and their accompanist, the one lone woman in the seated row, of the Independent Bible Church, 5 So. G St., in January of 1939. The choir was the largest men's choir on the Pacific Coast and one of the largest in the West. It was composed of members of the "Centurions," a Bible study class. The Independent Bible Church had purchased the building at 5 So. G St., formerly the Scottish Rite Cathedral, from the Masonic organization in early 1937. Easter Sunday at various Tacoma churches. Worshipers gather on the steps of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 602 South 34th St, on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939. St. Joseph's was built by its congregation members and dedicated in May of 1912. It was the first Slovak Catholic church built in the Northwest.

On a sunny Easter Sunday in 1939, three boys struggled with a potted lilly in front of the Central Baptist Church at 1201 So. J St. The boys were, left to right, solemn Gerald Larson, Gene Johnson balancing the plant and a huge grin and Peter Larson. A female parishioner, with corsage, watched from the background. The Gothic wooden church in the background was built in 1900 as the First Swedish Baptist Church. In 2005, it was named to the Tacoma Registry of Historic Places and is currently being restored. (T. Luther Memorial had its last service after 112 years on November 9th, 2003.

Christmas decorations on the Little Church on the Prairie are illuminated in this scene from 1939. The church was celebrating its second Christmas season. It had been dedicated in September of 1938. The little woodframe building had previously been a grocery store.

The Lakewood community was growing rapidly in 1938 when the area's first church was dedicated. Contractors converted an abandoned old grocery store into The Little Church on the Prairie by adding a steeple, new windows and doors, and remodled interior. The white picket fence surrounding the church enhanced the Colonial architectural style that was evolving in Lakewood.
