This large frame building was built as First Presbyterian Church in 1889, and later served as Central Lutheran Church. Farrell and Darmer, architects, designed the structure with Opperman and Berens as contractors. The elaborately detailed structure was demolished in 1955 to make way for the County-City Building. (T. Designed by architect George W. Bullard, the First Christian Church at 6th and K St. (Martin Luther King Way) was dedicated June 21, 1908. The classical revival building with a high dome was constructed of Tenino stone and had an array of small but beautiful stained glass windows. Built at a cost of over $40,000, its main auditorium could seat 1,200 persons. It, along with four houses on the same block, was torn down in 1963 to make room for a new building for Western Clinic. Constanti - Taylor wedding ceremony in St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Church has high, vaulted ceiling. Three large lights with multiple globes hang from ceiling. Elaborate altar adorned with floral arrangements. Shirley Constanti and Keith Bogan served as attendants for Marie Eileen Constanti and Thomas Zachary Taylor at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on March 25, 1940. A reception followed in the Rose & Gold room of the Hotel Winthrop. The newlywed couple will be making their home in San Diego, California. (T.Times, 3-25-40, p. 7)

Reverend Father Anthony Hack poses on the steps of the Holy Rosary Church with a large group. Father Hack, the pastor of Holy Rosary, and the church are celebrating his Silver Sacerdotal, marking 25 years of priesthood, with a jubilee. The children dressed in white are taking part in the celebration. The children and adults in dark clothing are believed to be family members. Prior to coming to Holy Rosary in 1935, Father Hack was pastor of the Church of the Visitation in South Tacoma and the Assumption Church in Seattle. Tacoma's First Methodist Church hosted the second annual Methodists Northwest conference from June 12- June 16, 1940. Bishop William E. Martin of Omaha presided. In 1939 two branches of the Methodist church in the Northwest, Methodist Episcopal and Protestant Methodist church united to become the Methodist Church. (T. Conference at the First Methodist Church. First Methodist Church of Tacoma was hosting the annual Methodists Northwest Conference from June 12 to June 16, 1940 at the church located at 4th & "K" (later Martin Luther King Jr. Way). Besides the business sessions and committee meetings, delegates found time to relax and enjoy activities in the church's large social hall. Here some attendees line up to play shuffleboard, one of the more popular exercises, the other being archery. (T.Times 6-14-1940, p. 3)

Conference at the First Methodist Church. Registration. Delegates to the Methodists Northwest conference receive a warm greeting at the registration table located in the First Methodist Church in June of 1940. 500 from Washington and Idaho were expected to attend the conference which ran from June 12 to June 16. Wedding of Gertrude McCutcheon and William Fry at the Little Church on the Prairie, Lakewood. Building converted from commercial uses to church in 1940. Gertrude McCutcheon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Parsneau, exchanged vows with William Landis Fry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey Fry of Oroville, California, in a double-ring ceremony on August 11, 1940. Mrs. Franklyn Coffield Ellis of San Francisco served as her sister's matron of honor. Burritt Anderson was the best man. The bride wore a silk jersey afternoon dress adorned with white orchids and carried a white prayer book. The new Mrs. Fry had graduated from Stadium High School and Racine's Western Institute (Seattle). The groom graduated from the University of California and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. On Sunday, November 17, 1940, soldiers from Ft. Lewis, McChord Field and Camp Murrary filled in as the choir at the Independent Bible Church, which met at the former Scottish Rite Cathedral. (T.Times 11/18/1940 p.1)

Ellen Bell, wife of Rev. Arthur Bell, poses with stones from Westminster Abbey. The stones will be built into the reconstructed St. Lukes Memorial Episcopal Church. They were taken from part of a wall at the Abbey torn out during World War II air raids. The Westminster stones, as well as a piece of jasper from Jerusalem, believed to be from the site of David's temple, and a piece of sandstone from the Cathedral at Washington, D.C., will be placed in an inside wall of the sanctuary. When the original St. Lukes Church at 6th and Broadway was wrecked, the congregation plus that of the St. Marks Church at 36th and Gove had the stones numbered and dismantled to use in the construction of a new church at the Gove location. On April 18, 1941, Bobby Gosselin and John Comfort, students at St. Patrick's Parochial School, were putting the finishing touches on their entries in the 6th annual Rotary Club Hobby Show, to be held at the Winthrop Hotel April 26th. The boy at the left (probably Bobby Gosselin) was hard at work finishing a handcrafted chair. The boy at the right was using a wood lathe to make a wooden plate or tray. The contest was open to all Tacoma students 18 and under. Prizes were given in numerous hobby classifications, including model making, stamp collection, handicrafts and nature study. (T. This photograph of Lorna Royer, sitting on a window sill at St. Patrick School with her collection of stuffed animals, was taken in 1941. St. Patrick School was built at 1105 No. J Street in 1919. The building was demolished in 1992.

The Little Church on the Prairie. The picture of the Church was taken during the wedding photography for Jean McDonald and William Jepson, on August 17, 1941. The structure was formerly a grocery store and was converted into a church with the addition of a steeple, new windows and doors. It was dedicated in 1938, one of the first churches in the new community of Lakewood. Due to its quaint exterior, it was a popular choice for weddings.

On the morning of September 2, 1941, guests wait outside of St. Patrick's Catholic Church for the newly wedded couple Anne Louise Greiwe and Lt. John William Winship to exit the church on their way to the reception at the bride's parents' home. The couple had been married that morning by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor William J. Noonan before 200 friends and family. A week later, September 9th, the McChord Douglas B-18 bomber that the bridegroom was co-piloting crashed into the side of Mount Constance on the Olympic Peninsula on a night training flight. Everyone on board was killed instantly. (T. Times 9/2/1941, pg. 7)

Interior of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church showing Reverend Harold H. Engelbrecht at altar. Building built as Zion German Evangelical Lutheran in 1908, H. Crosley, Architect. After 16 years at the pulpit, Rev. Engelbrecht was leaving Tacoma to join the staff at the Lutheran University in Indiana. He came to Tacoma in 1925, after five years with a church in Puyallup. He co-founded Concordia Lutheran School and served the school in its early years in many capacities. (T. Times 10/14/1941, pg. 18)

Luther Memorial Church, 50th Anniversary service. The English Gothic church at So. 5th and I St. marked its Golden Anniversary on Sunday, October 26th, 1941. The church was officially organized on June 7, 1891 in a W.C.T.U. hall, but the first service was held February 13th in a dance hall. The group was originally called the Zion's English Lutheran Church. The pictured site was purchased in 1892 for $3500. The church was a pioneer in the sparsely settled district. The building, designed by Emanuel J.Bresemann and Marinus Durfee, Architects, was completed in 1910 and dedicated as Saint John's English Lutheran Church; it was later renamed Luther Memorial. The church held its final service after 112 years on November 9th, 2003; the building was sold to Multicare. (T. Times. 10/23/1941, pg. 12)
