An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.

Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

Harstad Hall, "Old Main", stands proudly in the middle of the expanding campus as shown in this elevated view. Just in front of the point where the sidewalks converge is the entrance gate to Pacific Lutheran College. The Student Union is to the left of "Old Main" and the Science Hall is between and above them. The library is to the upper right. In the far, upper left is the new Memorial Gymnasium. The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. Pacific Lutheran College "Choir of the West" with Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, Director of Music and Choir of the West Conductor. The choir wears traditional robes with a monogrammed stole. The Choir of the West toured the area and performed on the radio. They sang a classical repertoire. Prof. Malmin took over as director of the choir in 1937. The exterior of the chapel in Pacific Lutheran College's new chapel-music-speech building. A rose window decorates the facade over the main entrance to the building. The spire rises high above the roofline. Designed by architect John Richards, the building with its brick exterior blended well with the other college buildings.

Gathered around Tacoma's historic totem pole at 10th and A St. in this picture from November of 1951 are several of the principals in the fifth annual "Totem Bowl" football game which brings together the College of Puget Sound (UPS) and Pacific Lutheran College (PLU) teams Saturday November 10th in the Lincoln Bowl. Left to right are Co-Captains Don Murdock and Bob Demko of the Puget Sound squad; Eileen McArthur, C.P.S. yell queen; Bob Nielsen, P.L.C. Captain, and Jack Enochs, P.L.C. yell king. Miss McArthur and Enochs led student body groups from the two schools in a joint pep rally at the totem pole on Friday Nov. 9th. The Logger and Lute squads will be competing for the Tacoma Young Men's Business club "Totem Pole" trophy, an exact replica of the pole at 10th and A.

The new residence hall for women at the College of Puget Sound, circa March of 1939. The brick structure was erected in 1938, the school's fiftieth anniversary year. It was opened during the second semester January 30, 1939 and dedicated February 15, 1939. On the ground floor were a service room and large activity room, the main floor contained the lounge, office, dining room and kitchen, and the second and third floors were sleeping rooms for 40 students. College of Puget Sound Advanced Journalism class gets a front line view of the world of newspaper publishing in the office of veteran publisher Sydney Albert Perkins on November 22, 1939. The students spent an hour interviewing Mr. Perkins on opportunities in the field of journalism and methods of story development. Standing, left to right, are Tacoma Times columnist E.T. Short, students Betty Thralls, Mary Mladinov, James Clymont, Carl Lindgren, Virginia Marinoff, Mr. Perkins (seated) and Betty Cleary. Seated left are William Melton, Eleanor Weaver, Clarice Ross and Helen Gassaman. One topic of conversation was the many autographed photos of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Congressmen and national political figures on the walls, a souvenir of Perkins' days in Washington, D.C. where he served as private secretary to Senator Mark Hanna. Mr. Perkins had probably the finest collection of signed photographs in the country, including portraits of the most prominent men of the nation over the past two decades. (T.
