At its peak, population at the Hanford Site swelled to 51,00, making it one of the largest construction camps in the world. Between 1943 - 45, 130 barracks, 900 temporary buildings and 4,300 trailers were built. Eighty tons of food were served each day in the eight mess halls.

A year after the Puyallup Tribe reached a $162 million settlement which guaranteed hundreds of new jobs, social services, and economic rebirth programs began to receive funding. “Among the tribe’s projects for economic improvement is a $2.1 million state-of-the-art bingo hall, seating up to 1,500 people, to be built in east Tacoma.” The bingo hall was estimated to generate between 90 to 150 jobs.

Back of photo: School district and Safe Streets officials stood by while the Washington National Guard used two bulldozers to clear a parcel of land in front of McIlvaigh Middle School on the East Side of Tacoma Sunday morning. The 118th Transportation Company of the 144th Battalion cleared the school district property that Shanta Wright of Safe Streets said had been an area of drug activity. News/ Puyallup Women Protest Spouse Fishing Ruling
Angry Puyallup Tribe women gathered at the Tribal administration building to protest a new rule disallowing spouses fishing rights. From left, Laura Rivera, Ramona Bennet, Deanna Val Peterson, and Betsy Terrones (holding kids Joaquin 1, and Richard, 2 months). After meeting with the group of women the rule was dropped and the spouse fishing right was restored.

Senior citizens from all over the county danced to the tunes of Pep Perry's Combo, a quartet playing music from the 40's and 50's, at Green River Community College. The college's Special Events Program sponsored the Valentine's dance which was free. Seniors enjoyed refreshments and each got a complimentary photo taken with their sweetheart.
(The program has been going for about 4 years)

Volunteer Edward Fynn sweeps away litter and broken glass from the sidewalk at 23rd and L Streets on Hilltop this morning as volunteers from the Hilltop Action Coalition, St. Joseph Hospital and citizens of the Hilltop community joined several on-duty officers from Tacoma PD in a sweep into the neighborhood to deliver some TLC as part of the "Area 5" neighborhood clean-up project. The group swept, cleaned and painted over graffiti the area from South 23rd to South 25th and from South K street to South Sheridan.

Eighty-seven-year-old Rudy Anderson has earned the privelege of sacking out for a snooze in the middle of the Old Fashioned Senior Picnic held at Five Mile Lake County Park Thursday. He had just finished a lunch of barbecued hamburger and the Navy Band of Seattle had begun to play. Hundreds of seniors from around the area attended and activities included games and drawings as well.
