The United States Post Office was celebrating the 30th Anniversary of airmail service. The nations first scheduled airmail route was established on May 15, 1918. Thee first airmail shipment covered 218 miles, between Washington D. C. and New York. Airmail shipments have increased in Tacoma, in 1926 there were 42 letters per day, today there are more than 25,000 letters per day. People turned out in great numbers for the appearance of President Harry S. Truman per the crowd scene on South 9th Street at Broadway and Saint Helens Avenue near the Music Box theatre. It was Mr. Truman's first visit to Tacoma as president and he took the time to speak to the large crowd estimated at 9,000. The President led a long distance attack on the Republican-controlled Congress for its failure to go along with his pricing, housing and farm recommendations. He called it a "special interest Congress." President Truman and his entourage can barely be seen on the stand covered with bunting. ALBUM 1. Harry S. Truman paid his first visit to Tacoma as President on Thursday June 10, 1948. He spoke from a platform erected in the center of the triangle at 9th and Broadway before an estimated crowd of 9,000. After speaking, he left for Olympia where he was to be the guest of Governor Mon Wallgren. Senator Warren G. Wallgren were old acquaintances; Mr. Truman had stumped the state in 1944 along with Mr. Wallgren. President Truman was in Washington for a event-packed two days. He would visit Olympia, Bremerton, Seattle and Tacoma, addressing audiences with his long distance attack on the Republican-controlled Congress and its failure to adopt his pricing, housing and farm recommendations. Northern Pacific Railway's new freight station and office building was constructed using brick building materials. The building provided modern office space and efficient freight handling facilities. The office portion is 70 feet by 57 feet, and the freight station is 55 feet by 250 feet. The new facilities include parking space and pavement along Puyallup Avenue, this will be used exclusively by the freight station.

Leon Titus was allowed to ride in the cab of a 122 foot long locomotive, this train makes the Seattle--Tacoma--Portland run daily. Leon would get to ride to Seattle and back to Tacoma. Rose Weller is proudly displaying her calla lily arrangement, "Madonna and Lilies". Rose made this lovely arrangement for an evening dinner party, she stated this particular arrangement could be used as a centerpiece or an altar. H. V. Howlett Jr. is one of the newest members of Tacoma's police department. Twenty three year old Howlett is said to have the largest shoulders, his measurements are: 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, biceps are 18-1/2 inches, chest 52 inches, waist 33 inches, forearms 13-1/2 inches and shoulders are 25 inches. Howlett is from Boston, in his spare time he likes to work out with bar bells and wrestle. He is hoping pro-wrestling will return to Tacoma, in Southern California he entered the ring professionally and became known as the "Iron Dutchmen" (T. Times, 5/25/48, p. 7).

St. Joseph's School of Nursing program was a three year program, the approximate cost in 1948 was $400 for three years, including $50 for their uniforms. The nursing student's fees included tuition, room and board, meals, medical expenses and incidentals, fees had increased $15 from the previous years. Nursing students were required to live at the Nurses' Residence for the first 2-1/2 years. Tacoma's Monday Civic Club was planting the first seedling trees at Franklin Park near So. 12th St. and So. Puget Sound. The trees would be known as "The Monday Civic Club Memory Grove", the trees were a gift from the Washington State Forestry Department. Over 100 members of the Civic Club were participating in the ceremonies, which would begin with a luncheon at the New Yorker Cafe. It was his first time in Tacoma as president. The President spoke to crowds estimated at 9,000 at 9th & Broadway before leaving for Olympia with Gov. Wallgren. Mr. Truman and his family were paying a short visit to the Pacific Northwest to view flood damages in Washington and Oregon. Although embarked on a cross-country tour by train, Mr. Truman would be viewing the disastrous Columbia River flood via his personal DC-6, "Independence," which would fly over the Cowlitz valley, along the Columbia River and as far east as Kennewick. A beaming Harry S. Truman firmly grips the hand of Tacoma police officer Jack B. Skaanes during his first visit to Tacoma as President in June, 1948. President Truman was making a tour of flood damaged Washington and Oregon locations. While in Tacoma, he took the opportunity to meet Tacoma's law enforcement personnel and acknowledging the throngs of Tacomans who lined the streets downtown. It was the first time the city had entertained a chief executive for several years. Mrs. Truman and daughter Margaret accompanied the president. TPD officer Jack B. Skaanes was with the department for 27 years; his son Jack P. Skaanes and grandson Jack D. Skaanes followed in his footsteps by also joining the TPD. Group of four at Youth Center, Crusade for Children, Mr. Bryant. The United Nations sponsored a Crusade for Children to provide emergency mass feeding of starving, homeless children of war-torn lands by 28 established overseas relief agencies. Tacoma joined the crusade and citizen groups were distributing calorie coupons among the city's clubs, labor unions, P.T.A. groups and churches. The coupons were sold in denominations of $1, $5, and $10 by the organizations to their individual members. One of the committees organizing the fundraiser met at the Tacoma Youth Center. Laying of linoleum at Weston home, DFPA, Mrs. Leik. Joseph and Carol Weston had an addition to their home built by Harry R. May on Interlaaken Dr. in Lakewood. The addition was started in March 1948 and is now nearing completion with the interior finishing. Two men are working together in laying linoleum in the addition, one spreads the adhesive and the other is ready to roll and smooth the linoleum. More rolls of the linoleum stand in the corner. Drywall has been patched and smoothed on the walls. Earlier views of the addition: D32206-7 and D32369-3.

Members from Daughters of the Nile, Tacoma's Egyptian Patrol of the Zora Temple, were getting ready to board a train en route to Phoenix, Arizona. The women would be attending the supreme session of the Daughters of the Nile. They are boarding Northern Pacific Railway's Cascade Limited at Union Depot. Eunice C. Miller is the Captain of the Egyptian Patrol and Lillian M. Shotwell is the current Nile Queen. Names appear in newspaper (T. Times, 5/21/48, p. 1).

Barn yard dance at Woodbrook Hunt Club, Lakewood Orthopedic Club, Mrs. VanWinkle. "Calico Capers" was sponsored by the Lakewood Orthopedic Association on April 24, 1948. Hay and spring flowers decorated the club. "Gals in gingham and lads in jeans" danced to old-time music and more contemporary music. Here we see Thelma and William M. Busch dancing to the music. Bob Hager led the group in square dances. The Lakewood Guild was one of the newer of the 37 guilds associated with the Tacoma Orthopedic Association.
