This elegant Victorian-era home is framed between two towering trees in this September 14, 1966, photograph. Many might recognize the home at 522 No. E as the former residence of David Dowd. It is now being restored and redecorated by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hood who came from Alexandria, Virginia, in 1965. Built in 1890, the structure has the typical high, airy ceilings and large floor space of the time period. The Hoods are filling the home with many antiques including French and Hepplewhite furniture, a footstool embossed with an authentic English crest crown, and turn-of-the-century gas light chandeliers from New Orleans. Photograph ordered by the Seattle P.I. (TNT 6-12-66, D-3)

This new home was located at 4610 Merry Lane W. in the University Place neighborhood of Beckonridge. The contemporary, two-level residence with pre-stained vertical siding was built by Dally Construction Co. of Puyallup. It was planned to blend with nature as trees grew through parts of the home. A Douglas fir grew through the rear second floor sun deck over the ground floor patio. A stately Madrona rose through the roof between the double carport and the front entrance to the home. Purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Don Bozman, formerly of Texas, the Beckonridge-neighborhood home was situated in the first open space scenic community. Beckonridge was 240 acres of unspoiled natural woodland. There were wooded pathways throughout the community, including paths to the new Sunset Elementary School, and all utilities were underground. Lake City seen in miniature from the air on August 7, 1966. The Lake City neighborhood continued to grow in the mid-60's but there were still many pockets of forested areas visible. Neighborhoods in the Lake City/Lakewood area tended to have larger lots and a more suburban feel. This view appears to have been taken looking north-northwest from the American Lake area, including Veterans Drive S.W. Washington turns into Military Road in upper center of the photograph. Carp Lake is lake above Military Road; large lake at top of photograph is Lake Louise. The Lake City Community Church is the building with the white roof along the right edge near center. Just above it is the Lake City Community Center. On the lower left is visible a portion of the parking lot for the American Lake Park North. Below the curve in the road, just below the center of the photograph, is the Veterans Garage. Photograph ordered by Bank of Tacoma. (Additional information provided by a reader)

Studio display of Almond Roca. Delicious Almond Roca, a Brown & Haley product, came out with new candy containers in 1966. The crunchy log-shaped candy was developed in 1923 by Harry Brown in Tacoma. As the cans indicate, the number one ingredient is almonds with a buttercrunch toffee center. In 1927 Almond Roca became the first candy in the world to be put in a sealed tin. The ability to keep the candy fresh while packed in air-tight tins allowed the product to be shipped to servicemen overseas during WWII hastening its popularity worldwide.
