Permanente Metals had now been operating in Tacoma for a little over six months. The company produced Kaiser Aluminum products and was a growing industry throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Tacoma subsidiary was an aluminum reduction plant, which helped increase the amount of aluminum produced throughout the nation. Thousands of Pierce County residents attended the grand opening of the new Parkland Shopping center at the corner of Garfield and C Street South in Parkland on Saturday June 19, 1948. The new two-story building, which cost approximately $150,000 to build, had 12 stores on the ground level and 23 apartments on the second floor. The new stores included: Johnson's Drugs, Margie's Beauty Salon, Sunset Furniture, The Donut Bar and a medical clinic. Herbert Socolofsky acted as master of ceremonies. (T. Times, 6/18/48, p. 11). CPS. Dr. R. Franklin Thompson, President of the College of Puget Sound, and John Heinrick, Athletic Director at CPS, hold an architectural drawing of the proposed new field house at the campus. Three other men stand behind the drawing by Dugan, Mock and Morrison Architects. Groundbreaking took place August 4, 1948, and the building was dedicated to the 138 men who had been students at the college who died in World War II.

The Sportsmen's Show was having demonstrations, explanations, displays, safety seminars and educational film clips. The show would last for four days in the lobby of the Winthrop Hotel. The fire at Dittemore's Coffee Shop gutted the building. The loss was set at $75,000. The two-story building was located 12 miles south of Tacoma on the Tacoma-Olympia highway. The spectacular fire of uncertain origin April 22, 1948, was brought under control by fire departments from Lakewood, McChord field, Fort Lewis and Tacoma. The fire broke out in the basement and moved up through the building through dumb waiters and an elevator. Flames shot 200 feet into the air. Two persons were slightly injured. Ray Ridge Motors Incorporated offered their customers complete automobile services, including: lubrication, washing, motor work, electrical service, body work, fender repairs, complete painting, front system and steering and bear frame aligning. They were Tacoma's only authorized Lincoln-Mercury automobile dealers, they advertised "Where Service is a Habit". The 165 foot "Scarlet Queen" would have a fishing crew of eighteen men, Tony Dutra was the ship's skipper. Interior view of the crew's quarters, six mahogany trimmed bunks with inner spring mattresses, individual lockers and reading lamps and benches. St. Joseph's nursing students were considered to be in the "Pre-Clinical" period during the first six months of their program. The first year of studies was spent almost entirely in classrooms and demonstration rooms.The freshmen were required to wear miniature caps, after they successfully completed this period they received full-fledged training caps. Mason Methodist Church's Young Married Couples Club sponsored the second annual Baby Show held on Sunday, May 23, 1948, in the church's gymnasium. Registration was done at the door and awards were presented to all contestants. Sitting on the table is believed to be 10-month-old Kitty Knapp who watched as her registration was processed; two other children wait their turns. Bob Dickinson (far right) and his Orchestra opened in the Wedgwood Room of the Winthrop Hotel in June of 1948. Dickinson, who could play six different instruments and sing solos, was a longtime friend of Bing Crosby. He and his orchestra had been playing in and around Tacoma for eight years including the old Crystal Ballroom from 1944 through 1946. Previously, he had been music director at both KOMO and KJR radio in Seattle. Sitting on the piano, surrounded by six orchestra members, is vocalist Margie Smith. According to the News Tribune, they are: (left to right) Jan Busbank at the piano, Dave Black, Charles Childs, drums, Francis Coe, bass, Miss Smith, Dean Christian, Tony Bye, saxophone and Bob Dickinson at far right. On June 8, 1948 Stadium High School's senior women were the hostesses for a special orchid luncheon held in a private dinning room at the University-Union Club. Each of the 52 guests received a purple Vanda orchid, flown in from Hilo on the island of Hawaii. The mothers of the four hostesses helped to arrange the luncheon, and were gifted with an orchid corsage. The luncheon was a long anticipated yearly event for Stadium seniors. Douglas Fir Plywood Association helped establish the Plywood Research Foundation in Tacoma. The lab is consistently testing the plywood for strength and durability, testing sites are located throughout Washington State. On June 10, 1948, outspoken President Harry S. Truman addressed a tightly packed crowd numbered at 9,000 on 9th Street near Broadway and Saint Helens Avenue in downtown Tacoma. Music Box (Tacoma Theater) and Telenews (Colonial Theater) in background. A small military band, at rest, is located to the foreground. On the speaker's stand along with President Truman were General Mark Clark, commanding general of the 6th Army, the President's family, Senator Warren G. Magnuson, Governor Mon C. Wallgren, Secretary of the Interior Julius Krug, Citizens Chrm. Leo A. McGavick and Mayor C.Val Fawcett. Mayor Fawcett had proclaimed Thursday, June 10th, as President's Day in Tacoma and urged all residents to "participate in welcoming our distinguished guest." It was President Truman's first official visit as president and the first time the city had entertained a chief executive for several years. ALBUM 1. Fred James, along with his wife and some other family members hit a cougar with their automobile. The cougar severely damaged the fender and grill and was wounded. Fred James finished up the cougar by hitting it over the head several times with an eight foot two-by-four. Northern Pacific started a gradual change from steam to diesel power in 1938, they had their first freight diesel electric locomotive in operation and on the road in 1944 and passenger diesels have been added since 1947.
