In September of 1947 Tacoma boy scouts Bob Evans (left) and LeRoy Gruver returned from the World Jamboree which was held that year near Paris, France. The two scouts were greeted with a three-way handshake by their unidentified scout master as they disembark from their train at Union depot. Nearly 40 local Boy Scouts and scout masters helped the 1947 Community Chest campaign by posting pole cards along Tacoma streets to keep Tacoma citizens aware of the upcoming campaign. Here Russell Matthews, Lucien Gumm, Bob Wright and Scoutmasters S/Sgt. L.J. Keehley and Lt. J.A. Kruavica from Troop 102, McChord Field, put up placards in South Tacoma. Lifesaving and water safety were among the many skills taught at the special Benbow Lake Red Cross Training Center at Kapowsin in July of 1947. 112 high school students from 45 Red Cross chapters in Canada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington were sent for the special 12 day training session, including Nancy Hobbs from Tacoma and Harry Butts from Sumner. The young people sent to the camp were chosen for their known fidelity to Red Cross service and fitness for leadership. (Young people and instructor in photo not identified.) Here are the big winners in the 1947 Tacoma Poggie Club Father-Son-Daughter Salmon Derby held at Point Defiance on July 13th. At the left, Richard Sheriff holds his top prize bicycle while his dad, Johnny Sheriff holds their 18 lb. 13 oz. salmon. At the right are Judy Weller and her father C.J. (Bud) Weller. In June of 1947, the Pierce County Chapter of the Red Cross held a 10 day aquatic safety school with 131 men and women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Montana at Benbow Lakes near Kapowsin. It was one of six such schools operated in the U.S. One of the skills covered was lifesaving. Some of the women practiced artificial respiration with other trainees on a dock at the lake. The women were wearing bathing suits and caps. (T. Times 6/24/1947, pg. 5)

Children who have learned swimming under the Red Cross, American Red Cross, Mrs. Thomsen. A large group of boys stand in the pool at Lincoln High School watching while the instructor helps one of the boys learn how to float. Over 5,000 free lessons were given so far that summer. All instructors were trained at an American Red Cross safety institute. The free lessons were open to children from 8 to 17 years of age.
