Red Cross had just started their annual fund raising campaign in Pierce County. Red Cross volunteers and community members were getting ready to begin asking for donations from individuals, families and businesses. Members from the Tacoma Boy's Clubs are loading up Red Cross fund raising campaign posters and information into someone's car. "Give Now '47" and "The Red Cross Carries On" are printed on the posters.

Dr. Millard J. Nelson Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. Mrs. A.O. (Mathilda H.) Burmeister was the social chairman of the silver tea held May 27, 1947, at the home of Paul B. and Genevieve M. Smith, by the newly formed Dr. Millard J. Nelson Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. 400 guests were invited to the event. Mrs. Smith, in a floor length, floral print dress and white jacket stands outside in a garden setting. The Tacoma Junior Women's Club was organizing the seventh annual "Eyes for the Blind" carnival and bazaar. Activities, including a "Fish Pond", food booths and social events would all be part of the fun-filled weekend. Left to right view of Ruth C. Groves, Valorie C. Soares and Jeanne L. The Red Cross Pierce County Chapter held a 10-day aquatic safety school with 131 men and women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Montana at Benbow Lakes, Kapowsin, Washington. It was one of six such schools operated by the Red Cross in the United States. The canoe in this photograph has been identified as a Willits canoes, built by Earl and Floyd Willits at their shop on Day Island. The canoe features a full sailing rig also built by the brothers. Children who have learned swimming under the Red Cross, American Red Cross, Mrs. Thomsen. A large group of boys stand in the pool at Lincoln High School watching while the instructor helps one of the boys learn how to float. Over 5,000 free lessons were given so far that summer. All instructors were trained at an American Red Cross safety institute. The free lessons were open to children from 8 to 17 years of age.

In June of 1947, the Pierce County Chapter of the Red Cross held a 10 day aquatic safety school with 131 men and women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Montana at Benbow Lakes near Kapowsin. It was one of six such schools operated in the U.S. One of the skills covered was lifesaving. Some of the women practiced artificial respiration with other trainees on a dock at the lake. Here are the big winners in the 1947 Tacoma Poggie Club Father-Son-Daughter Salmon Derby held at Point Defiance on July 13th. At the left, Richard Sheriff holds his top prize bicycle while his dad, Johnny Sheriff holds their 18 lb. 13 oz. salmon. At the right are Judy Weller and her father C.J. (Bud) Weller.
