Benbow Lakes, Red Cross Aquatic School for the Northwest, 75 men and 56 women. The Red Cross Pierce County Chapter held a 10-day aquatic safety school with 131 men and women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Montana at Benbow Lakes, Kapowsin, Washington. It was one of six such schools operated by the Red Cross in the United States. The canoe in this photograph has been identified as a Willits canoes, built by Earl and Floyd Willits at their shop on Day Island. The canoe features a full sailing rig also built by the brothers. The Tacoma Junior Women's Club was organizing the seventh annual "Eyes for the Blind" carnival and bazaar. Dr. Millard J. Nelson Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. Mrs. A.O. (Mathilda H.) Burmeister was the social chairman of the silver tea held May 27, 1947, at the home of Paul B. and Genevieve M. Smith, by the newly formed Dr. Millard J. Nelson Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. 400 guests were invited to the event. Mrs. Smith, in a floor length, floral print dress and white jacket stands outside in a garden setting. Red Cross had just started their annual fund raising campaign in Pierce County. Red Cross volunteers and community members were getting ready to begin asking for donations from individuals, families and businesses. Members from the Tacoma Boy's Clubs are loading up Red Cross fund raising campaign posters and information into someone's car. Thirteen volunteers were photographed in early December of 1946 wrapping Christmas gifts for the servicemen who were patients at Madigan and American Lake hospitals. The ladies are hard at work in the Red Cross Building at 702-04 Broadway, hoping to make the "Best Christmas Yet" for the hospital-bound military personnel. At least 3,000 individual Christmas parcels were provided during the 1946 holiday season. Emmett Anderson was the chairman of this community service channeled through the Red Cross. Among the largest donors were the Tacoma and Puyallup Elks Lodges, the Army-Navy Club and the Central Labor Council. (T.Times, 12/7/1946, p.7-article)

Last Man Club, American Legion, November 30, 1946. Eighteen men stand behind six empty chairs draped with American flags during their annual meeting held at the Hotel Winthrop. The Last Man Club was formed by World War I veterans who were also past Commanders of the Edward B. Rhodes Post of the American Legion in December of 1938. A bottle of 1917 cognac was reserved for the sole survivor to drink a toast to his fallen fellow members.

Tacoma Mayor Val Fawcett with woman believed to be his wife Linda at Gyro Club District Convention function at Tacoma Golf and Country Club in August of 1946. The three day annual convention of the Gyro Club District Number 4 attracted 500 delegates representing 18 clubs from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. Gyro Club District Convention. Twelve guests take a break from the festivities. The Gyro Club District Number 4 held their three-day convention August 8, 9, and 10th, 1946, in Tacoma. 500 delegates representing 18 clubs from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia attended the convention. Business was conducted during the daytime. A golf tournament was held the first evening and a barbeque dinner and dance was held the second evening at the Country Club.
