Exterior view of the City of Tacoma, Municipal Plant & Shops; a $50,000 remodeling job had just been completed. The work space on the second floor was doubled and a concrete ramp which provides access to the old and new rooms was constructed. General Mills Sperry flour plant was one of the oldest businesses in Tacoma, and had been in the flour and grains industry for over 97 years. The plant was conveniently located in Tacoma's waterfront area by Commencement Bay, this gave the plant easy water and railroad access. Exterior of the Griffin Wheel Company plant at 5202 So. Proctor Street. Started in Chicago in 1887 by T.F. Griffin, the company made chilled wheels for freight cars. The Tacoma plant was established in south Tacoma in 1897 after acquiring the property of the American Foundry Company.

Long, narrow heated vats stand along the factory floor. A workman operates an overhead crane for lowering and lifting materials being galvanized. The crane can move horizontally along overhead rails. In April of 1951, when this photograph of Perry W. Smith's original Frisco Freeze was taken, beefburgers were 30 cents, shakes were 25 cents, and you could get either a root beer or a cup of coffee for a dime. The popular hamburger stand and local landmark opened in July of 1950 and was open 365 days of the year, including part time on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Perry Smith died May 27, 1990 two months short of the 40th birthday of his stand; his wife and daughter carried on with the business. (Ordered by Holroyd Company.) TPL-10123

In April of 1951, British Car Sales, owned by J.M. Henderson and R.F. Snead, was housed in a one-story concrete block building set back from the road. Several British sports cars were displayed in front of their showroom on this sunny day. A sign in the window advertised Hillman, Austin, MG, Morris and the Jaguar Sports Mark V.
