Members of the Tacoma High School faculty and the senior class, class of 1900, posed on the porch and steps of the school then located at 714 Tacoma Avenue South. The site was the former location of the Washington College, private school for boys. Two students have been identified in the photograph: George (or Georgia) Armstrong and Roy Knapp. Roy Knapp is seated in the second row of steps, second from left, next to an unidentified female. He was the business manager in 1899-1900 for the "Tahoma," the monthly publication of the Tacoma High School students and would pass away in 1906. Two cadets sit on the step railings. They are holding their distinctive hats and appear to be wearing similar clothing, i.e. uniforms. Cadets would participate in drills and would have an armory prepared for their use. ca. 1937. Stadium High School Girls' Marching Unit, the Tigerannas, ca. 1937. The Tigerannas were formed in 1937 to march with the Stadium Band, providing a little extra color to performances. They were the brainchild of R.C. Fussell, Stadium Instrumental director. The 45 girls were photographed standing in wing formation. Stadium High School's 56th annual graduation exercises, held June 8th at the Armory for the Class of 1939. Students at the back of the photograph, audience in foreground. The graduating class totalled 653 students and the ceremony was estimated to be attended by over 2500 persons. The sign "Education for What?" states the theme of the four student commencement speakers. Betty Binns, Helen Phill, and Robert Elliott tied for valedictory honors, each completing 3 years of study with straight A's. Class president Maynard Miller joined them as a speaker. Lincoln High School's A Cappella Choir left by train on March 26, 1938, to compete in the St. Louis Music Festival. The 60-member choir took along 10,000 daffodils to promote the area's Daffodil Festival. Mayor George Smitley, left, and Mayor-elect John Siegel, right, are on hand for the choir's send-off. Daffodil Festival Attendant Bernice Daniel of Lincoln High School, holds a bouquet of daffodils and choir manager, Milton Evans, wears a daffodil lei. Stadium High School 1939 Basketball Team. The team, under the direction of Coach V.G. Lowman, was on top of the Tacoma prep standings. Considered short for a basketball team, they made up for their lack of altitude with sheer attitude. The fighting Tigers, in at least six of their games, came from far behind to win. Team members are, front row left to right, Art DeMaris, Matt Kapovich, Bob Loftness, Wes Hudson, Marion Klarich and Russ Soper. Back row, Dick Donelson, Dave Livingston, Dave Doud, Coach Lowman, Fred Angus, Warren Harvey and George Warfer. Harry Pitcher (kneeling, far left), the engineer in charge of construction of the new Clover Park High School shop building, supervised the laying of the cornerstone on March 10, 1941. The $16,000 shop building was part of the national defense education service project. It was financed 50-50 by the school district and the WPA. The building was scheduled to be completed in June, when the school would begin to conduct both day and night classes for enlisted men. Planned courses include metal and wood working, blueprint reading, machine drawing, pre-aviation and completion of high school studies. Clover Park was chosen as the location for the facility due to its proximity to Ft. Lewis, Camp Murray and McChord Airfield. Assisting Mr. Pitcher are: (l to r) Mrs. Iva Alice Mann, school board member; Pat Walters, district director of operations for the WPA; J.T.S. Fife High School's hoopmen defeated Clover Park, 44 to 31, in an exciting game at Lakewood that packed the gymnasium. Racking up Fife's 11 to 1 winning season were: Spear, Rowe, Dreyer, Evancich and Vinson, along with substitutes Sakahar, Hamamishi, Herting, Wilcox and Shagami. (T. Times, 2/20/1941, p. 15).

The Rifle Club was designed to promote the correct use of firearms, both for recreation and in national defense. The Club, after the departure of their regular advisor, got a late start in the school year, but still managed to hold two matches with Marymount, losing one and tying the other. Beauties participating in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest sponsored by the Lincoln High School Music and Physical Education Departments on February 21, 1941 were also trying out for the 10 model roles in the upcoming original musical comedy "Of Men and Models." L to R: Garnet Thompson, Martha Farrell, Betty Snyder, Janet Wolters, Harriet Somervell, Doris Davey, Matilda Drennen, and Lois Dahl. Participating contestants had be to 5'4" or over and wear bathing suits and high heel shoes. The world premier theatrical piece was written by Lincoln students and posed the musical question "What happens when a football team inherits a Fifth Avenue Couture House?" (T. Student cast of Stadium High School's production of "The Merry Widow." The opera would be produced March 13, 14 & 15th, 1941. It was the 29th annual production of the music department. Donna Mae Jaden (center, back row) had the starring role. She would go on to Hollywood fame as actress Janis Paige. (T. Times)

Members of the 41st Division of the Washington National Guard worked on their high school studies at Clover Park High School while in uniform in May of 1941. Even though they had been called up for active duty, they took classes to enable them to graduate from high school with their regular classes. The program was believed to be the only one of its kind in the United States. (T. Times 05/09/1941 p.2)

On May 8, 1941, 250 members of the 41st Division graduated in uniform from Clover Park High School. Their National Guard unit was called up for active duty before they were able to complete high school. A unique program was devised that allowed them to learn soldiering during the day and to complete their high school credits at night. (T. Times 5/8/1941, pg. 8)

New addition at Clover Park High School. Half circle one story music room attached to rear of two story brick building with a greenhouse on the roof. The greenhouse was built just outside the new biology and botony lab. The addition cost $97,213, over $39,000 from state grant, $77,000 from a bond issue and some local tax funds. Charles and Clarence Rueger, Architects, designed the structure. Although brand new, the school was already overcrowded with 770 students and a large increase in enrollment was expected.
