St. Leo's basketball team won the coveted prize, the Knights of Columbus trophy, for their win in the Parochial Grade School League Championship in 1945. They defeated Visitation 30-20 in a play-off game. Names appear in newspaper (T. Times, 3/8/45, p. 11).

Caswell Girls Bowling Team. Caswell Optometrists bowling team have won the Class A Women's Bowling League championship on the Broadway alleys. The Tacoma All-stars bowling team took on a Seattle team in April and May of 1945 in the fourth annual inter-city championship tournament. Bowling for Tacoma were: seated (l to r) Ted Tadich and Bill Eggleston, wearing matching bowling shirts, and standing (l to r) are Pvt. Joe Wilman, Johny Radonich and Frank Barker. Pvt. Wilman was a nationally known bowler from Chicago who bowled for Ft. Lewis. Johny Radonich and Frank Barker bowled for Teamsters Local 313. (T. Times, 4/10/45, p. 9).

Jerry Worden. Milan Zlokovich, star California bowler, came to Tacoma to finish his 80-game series with Pvt. Joe Wilman June 1-3, 1945, at the North End Lanes. 40 games were rolled in San Francisco and 40 will be rolled here. (T.Times, 5/31/1945, p.15)

Times Golf Tournament. These men were part of the committee behind the 1945 Tacoma Open Golf Classic that was held May 27, 1945, at the Allenmore course. As well as an excellent golf championship, the canteen at Allenmore donated their earnings for the benefit of all servicemen and women. L-R, Ed Morris, H.R. Amundson's Gym, contact Will Maylon. Believed to be Johnny Lovett, a Fort Lewis lightweight. He is wearing boxing shorts and boxing gloves, posing in a fighting stance in boxing ring. Photographs of boxers and posters announcing matches line the walls behind him. Bellarmine High School Basketball team. The Bellarmine High School sophomore basketball team are the champions of the Tacoma sophomore league. The just beat the Lincoln and Stadium teams. This win also makes them the Upper City Teenage League champions. Names appear in newspaper (T. Times, 3/16/46, p. 5).

Nalley's Bowling team is gathered together at North End Alleys. Most Tacoma businesses had bowling leagues. They would compete against other leagues and eventually participate in a tournament, the winner would get a trophy.

Thirty-six young golfers competed in the Northwest Prep Championship Tournament held in July of 1946. Jerry Driscoll (left) beat his partners, Bruce Andreasen (center) and Dick Nicholson, by one and two strokes respectively in the 36 hole competition to win the Tacoma Jubilee golf title. (T. The Grand Opening of the Midget Auto Races Track at Athletic Park was on Friday May 10, 1946. The cars raced under flood lights, with time trials starting at 7 p.m. and races at 8:15 p.m. General admission was $1.50; children and servicemen were 75 cents. This aerial view of Tacoma shows the track and most of the area known as Hilltop. College of Puget Sound football game. The Loggers are training at the College of Puget Sound. The Loggers return to the grid-iron wars after a four year layoff during World War II.

Frank W. Patrick was named athletic director and head coach of the CPS Loggers football team at the College of Puget Sound in 1946. He was a former University of Pittsburgh and National Pro All-American football star. He played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Professional League in 1938 and 1939. At the 1937 Rose Bowl game, playing for the Univ. of Pittsburg, he carried the ball for two touchdowns and helped defeat the Huskies 21-0. Coach Patrick turned in his resignation after CPS's 1948 losing season. (Tamanawas, 1946)

These five women, dressed in matching polka dot dresses, bowled in the Women's A League for the 1306 Tavern in 1946. Owned by Inigo Lucchesi, the tavern was at 1306 Pacific Avenue. Inigo's wife Ann (second from right) was a very good bowler. On November 21, 1946 she had the top three game score for women bowling that night in Tacoma with a combined score of 540.The women on the team have been identified, from the names on their dresses as: (l to r) Dorothy Pollen, Mildred Fleming, Evelyn Stein, Ann Lucchesi, and Josephine Halko. Wearing the latest in stylish glasses, these women bowled for Green's Optometrists, 254 So. 11th, in November of 1946 at the Broadway Bowling Center. The women are wearing matching bowling shirts with their names above the left pocket: Marlys, Jean, Helen, Jona and Peggy. Several women's leagues competed at the Broadway Alleys, 739 1/2 Broadway, including the Broadway Ladies and the Eagles Auxiliary.

Over 16,000 rabid football fans left their turkey dinners on November 28, 1946 to attend the 25th Annual Stadium-Lincoln Thanksgiving Day game. The Stadium Tigers won 21 - 6, giving the Tigers an undefeated season, and winning for them both the Cross-State and City League Championships. (T.Times, 11/29/46, p.1; 11/30/1946, p.2)

Donald T. McDonald held the flag for his daughter, Mrs. Shirley Fopp, while she putted in their ball during the "mixed two-ball" foursomes tournament held at Fircrest Golf Course on August 7, 1948. The other couple in their foursome was Betty Carlson and Al H. Moody. Mrs. Fopp, the former Shirley McDonald, was a former club champion. A record 52 mixed doubles teams registered to participate in the big event. (T. Times, 8/11/48, p. 6).
