Heidelberg Breweries sponsored teams for various recreational leagues. Ten members of the brewery's bowling team pose for a photograph on April 30, 1954. Five men are crouching with their right hands upright; the five women behind them each grasps ahold of one man's arm. The men all have their names embroidered above the pockets on their bowling shirts.

Heidelberg sponsored both ladies and men's teams in bowling. Bowling was quite a popular sport in the 1950's with at least ten bowling alleys listed in the 1954 City Directory. TPL-6495

In September of 1937, Stadium High School's Coach Christie posed with his team in front of a Gothic arch at the school. Later they would represent their school at the state track meet in Pullman in May. Pictured in the back row, left to right, are McCord, Londos, Reynolds, Bennatts & Coach Christy. These nine young athletes from Holy Rosary won the 1954 parochial track championships. The boys are dressed in track uniforms with the initials "H.R." on their tank top shirts. Don Holmberg (left center) and Serge Grant grasp the trophy awarded to the recent parochial track kings. The Holy Rosary team scored 49 points to win the meet for 7th and 8th graders. The 6th Avenue Colts fielded two baseball teams in the summer of 1954, participating in both the Bantam and the PeeWee divisions. Seventeen beaming boys and their head coach and manager, Si Hovee, posed with banners on a sunny day in June. All the players are dressed in regulation uniforms with the team emblem sewn on. The teams were sponsored in the Tacoma Recreational Baseball League by the Greater 6th Avenue, Inc., a business and civic organization. The 6th Avenue merchants paid $500 out of their own pockets for the boys to participate in the city's united baseball program, as a way to help them keep busy in wholesome activities. The PeeWee Colts ended up being the PeeWee League Champs as they were undefeated in regular play and won the PeeWee Tournament at Peck Field. At the far left in the second row is Brian Cloherty. He went on to play at Bellarmine High, Seattle Univ., and Eastern Washington State (now Eastern Washington University). These young baseball players were listed as the runner-up team in the 1954 Midget League. They posed happily on August 12, 1954, at Jefferson Park, along with their bat boy and coaches. "Schwinn" is printed on the baseball jerseys; the boys played under the team name "Bicycles." They lost in the playoffs with the North Tacoma I.O.O.F. team. Both teams had identical 7-1 records in the final second half. The I.O.O.F. team won the final playoff game, 3-2, although losing pitcher Al Hopkins only allowed three hits. A young baseball player is shown just completing his throw in an August 29, 1954, photograph. The logo on his cap indicates that he is a member of the Cheney Studs, an amateur team sponsored by local lumberman and philanthropist, Ben Cheney. The young man is in a uniform with "Seattle" on the jersey instead of the customary pinstriped Studs uniform. The Cheney Studs had teams in other cities besides Tacoma, including Medford, Oregon, and perhaps in Seattle as well. Photograph ordered by Cheney Lumber Co.

Bob Van DeMark, Tacoma amateur golfer, at the Allenmore Jubilee Open Golf Tournament. Va DeMark performed well in the Tournament, tieing in the low net bracket with Max Jensen and Larry Staley at 132. He was tied for second in the low gross. (T. Times 7/21/1939, pg. 10)

A large group of competitors at the Pacific Northwest Archery Association's 13th Annual Tournament held on August 5-6, 1939 at the Jefferson Park archery range posed behind a line of trophies. Sixty competitors vied for the Northwest title, with Mr. and Mrs. Pat Chambers of Portland taking home most of the men's and women's trophies. Tacoma youngsters Sonny Johns and Dorothy Axtelle won the Junior titles. Sonny Johns was a former state junior champion. (TNT 8/7/1939, pg. 11-article on results)

The 13th annual Pacific Northwest Archery Association Tournament was held August 5-6, 1939 at the Jefferson Park ranges in Tacoma. Tacoma was well represented in the Junior Division with Dorothy Axtelle, left, and Sonny Johns, second from left, winning the Northwest Junior titles. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Chambers, right, of Portland won the men's and women's titles. The couple were the defending title holders. Mr. Chambers was also the current men's national champion. Sam Jackson, wearing a straw hat with a "Golden Jubilee" hat band, helped make July 23, 1939 special for two unidentified polio victims by taking them to a double header at Athletic Park, near So. 15th and Sprague. Three Tigers players sat behind the young patients, who were separated by two women (their mothers?), to have the day captured on film. Samuel Jackson was president of the Tacoma General Hospital and chairman of the board of the National Bank of Washington. The Tigers lost the first game of the day to Vancouver 6 to 5, but won the second 2 runs to 1, the Tigers' pitcher, Carl Brady, having given up only 3 hits. The "Golden Jubilee" was the Tacoma celebration of Washington's 50th anniversary of statehood.

1937 Stadium vs. Lincoln Thanksgiving Day football game in Stadium Bowl. Team members line the field. The stadium's concrete bleachers are filled with with the record turnout of 12,000 spectators. The game pitted the undefeated Stadium Tigers against the almost equally flawless Lincoln Abes. On March 25, 1937, over 12,000 fans turned out at the Stadium Bowl to watch the annual Stadium vs. Lincoln Thanksgiving Day football game. This was a view of the south side of the Big Bowl as the teams prepared to put the ball into play. Spectators filled the concrete bleachers. The undefeated Stadium Tigers won 34-0, clinching the City Title for them for the 4th straight year, and making them champions of the newly formed Cross-State League. On Thanksgiving Day 1937 before a crowd estimated at 12,000 fans, the Stadium High School Tigers beat the Lincoln High School Abes 34 to 0, clinching both the city championship and the Cross-State League title. The final score was the largest registered to that date in the annual competition between the two schools. Carl Opolsky, Stadium's halfback, picked up two touchdowns and two conversions securing first place as individual scoring leader in his league. (TNT 11/26/1937 p.12).
