Sea trials. The tuna-seiner "Cabrillo" churns through the waters of Commencement Bay on a beautiful spring day in 1968. She was undergoing sea trials before being turned over to Joseph Soares of San Diego who would use her to fish out of Puerto Rico. The 166-foot vessel with a 34-foot beam was launched by J.M. Mrs. Katie Karmatic of the Senior Centers, Inc., registers the leaded glass lamp of Mrs. Elliott Backup on May 27, 1968, as an entry in the two-day Senior Arts & Crafts exhibit. The exhibit, a highlight of "Salute to Senior Citizens Month," was held at Allied Arts, Inc., from May 30-31st. The products of 12 senior clubs and organizations were on display, including hundreds of scuptures, wood carvings, paintings, etchings, crocheted and knitted items, and other arts & crafts items. Mrs. Rowena Watson, newly hired Summer Youth Director for the Tacoma-Pierce County Opportunity & Development, Inc., summer camp, is flanked by Mrs. L.H. The camp was made available to 3000 youngsters age 7-21 without charge during the summer of 1968. Temple Beth El. The new Temple Beth El, 5975 So. 12th St., was dedicated on May 17, 1968. Designed by Tacoma architect Robert Billsbrough Price, the 17,000 sq. foot synagogue was built by Rome Construction. Stained glass windows in the 55-foot central tower were by Cummings Studio, Pinedale, California. Located in fields of scotch broom and directly north across 12th St. from Tacoma Community College, Temple Beth El was the first new synagogue built in Tacoma in 75 years. Rabbi Richard Rosenthal was the temple's leader. (TNT 5-16-68, A-1)

Arthur O'Connell and Roy Headley, of Grants Pass, Oregon, at Madigan Army Hospital during the visit of Hollywood stars in town for the grand opening of the Tacoma Mall Theater. Coincidentally, the two had met a month earlier at Long Bien Hospital, Vietnam. Mr. O'Connell had been making a good-will tour of Vietnam. Mr. O'Connell was an Academy Award nominee for "Picnic" and later, "Anatomy of a Murder." He was also in the well-known films "Bus Stop," "Man in the Gray Flannel Suit," and "Poseidon Adventure." Couple is husband and wife acting team of Madlyn Rhue and Tony Young. Miss Rhue and Mr.Young had appeared together in the Western, " He Rides Tall." (1964) They both were featured, separatedly, in many television and motion pictures. Miss Rhue starred in television's "Days of Our Lives" and appeared on "Mannix" and "Bonanza." Mr. Young, son of character actor Charleton Young, appeared basically in Westerns, including a two-year stint as "Cord" in "The Gunslinger" and films "Charro" and "Taggart." Others invited to the Tacoma Mall Theater festivities included Arthur O'Connell, Troy Donahue, Tippi Hedren, and Jody McCrea. Most of the actors also spent the afternoon at Madigan Army Hospital visiting the sick and wounded; there were many there recently evacuated from Vietnam. ALBUM 5.

The actors spent time talking to hospital patients, many of whom had recently returned from Vietnam. They extended their visit to meet as many men as possible and had barely enough time for a brief change of clothes before departing for the theater festivities. May 16, 1968, grand opening of the Tacoma Mall Theater. Miss Tacoma, Cleta Jo Johnson, is helped down from the stage set up in the parking lot. The current titleholder is the daughter of Mrs. Cleta Jean Johnson and graduated from Mount Tahoma High School. She and several Hollywood stars, including Arthur O'Connell, Tippi Hedren, Diane McBain, Troy Donahue and Jody McCrea, were introduced from the speaker's platform to the waiting crowd. Once inside the 1200-seat theater, there would be a live one-half hour telecast direct from the theater stage, featuring the Hollywood actors. The 8 o'clock viewing of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" was sold out; this would be the only time the Hollywood actors would be present, although a second late-night show was added. He was one of the last to leave Madigan after the visit concluded. He appeared mostly in Westerns in the 1950's and then became known for his comedic and romantic roles in six American International "Beach" movies with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon during the 1960's. Mr. McCrea and other celebrities would be introduced to the crowd on the speaker's platform located directly in front of the theater.
