College of Puget Sound had a ground breaking ceremony for their new building, the CPS Memorial Field House. The Memorial Field House will be dedicated to the 138 men from CPS who died in World War II. The Field House will be located on the south side of campus, it will have a steel reinforced concrete foundation, the building will be 200 feet by 168 feet and 36 feet from the floor to the overhead beams; it will accommodate more than 5,000 people. CPS. Marcello Mochi, center, was the Italian vice consul stationed in Seattle. He came to Tacoma to meet with the World Affairs Council October 5, 1948, at the College of Puget Sound. He told about the Italian struggle and some of the war-torn areas where he served during the Ethopian conflict and World War II. Shown with Mr. Mochi are Ray W. College of Puget Sound. 33 members of the 1948 College of Puget Sound Loggers football team left for San Jose, California with Head Coach John Heinrick (second row, far right) on the morning of September 30, 1948. They had already worked out on campus in preparation for the battle against the San Jose State Spartans on October 1st. Several interiors at CPS, Murtough Supply, Frank Murtough. Murtough Supply Company, owned by Frank J. Murtough, handled cleaning supplies and equipment and were distributors of Franklin's R.G. Products, Clarke & Finnell Floor Machines and Multi-Clean Vacuums. They were located at 706 Pacific Avenue. This interior view features an open hallway with seating, an elaborately carved side table, a portrait of a man wearing academic robes, and a grandfather clock. Draperies are closed over the windows. CPS Homecoming Parade, Times, buzz. The College of Puget Sound Homecoming Parade was held November 6, 1948, from Union Station up Pacific Avenue and Stadium Way to Stadium Bowl before the Homecoming football game. Prizes were awarded to the fraternity that entered the oldest car and to the fraternity with the best decorated float. Individual prizes were given to best clown or pair of clowns. The sign hanging on the side of the truck on loan from Griffin Fuel Company shown here says, "I may be old but I'm here with bells" . Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner, strob tests, Times, McMurtrie. The College of Puget Sound was holding a Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner contest in conjunction with Sadie Hawkins day and Homecoming Weekend. The judges would name the winning couple during half-time of the College of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran College football game and the winners would lead the grand march during the dance held that same evening. In 1948 College of Puget Sound had the Memorial Fieldhouse built, this building was dedicated in 1949 to those CPS students who died while serving in World War II. In 1949 the President's Residence would be constructed; Dugan, Mock and Morrison were the architects. Pacific Lutheran College President O.A. Tingelstad poses with the Swedish granite cornerstone for the new library building at the October 23, 1937 cornerstone laying ceremony. The cornerstone laying for the new library structure at Pacific Lutheran College on October 23, 1937. A group of 20 notables pose for a portrait beside the building on the speakers' platform. Building design by Emanuel J. Bresemann, Architect, and the architectural firm of Heath, Gove and Bell. It was built for $104,000 debt free and was dedicated in 1939. The cornerstone laying ceremony of the new library building on the Pacific Lutheran College campus took place on Saturday, October 23, 1937. A crowd gathered around the partially completed brick building to listen to the college's "Choir of the West." At this time, the school had an enrollment of 700 and was a Christian Junior College and Normal School headed by Dr. O.A. Tingelstad. This building was replaced in 1967 by the Mortvedt Library; it was remodeled and is now known as Xavier Hall. (T.Times 10/25/1937, pg. 3)

ca. 1926. In 1926, according to the City Directory, Beutel Business College was located at 937 1/2 Broadway in the Anderson Building, which has since been demolished. Other businesses at this location included the Mode-Art Apparel Store, Lewis Brothers Clothing and the Electro Dental Parlors. The slogan for Beutel was "Best by Test of more than thirty years." The school was founded in 1887 by John Tate, making it the oldest commercial school in Tacoma and southwest Washington. It was originally known as Tacoma Business College. C.F. Beutel, who gave the school his name, purchased partial interest in the school in 1902. (filed with Argentum)

ca. 1934. Play at College of Puget Sound. Twenty-seven people on stage, some dressed as reporters, some as police officers. One man lying on floor, either playing dead or wounded. The Dramatic Art Department's motto was "Development of Personality through Drama." The department gave more than 150 students the chance to appear before an audience in a wide variety of plays. ca. 1952. The cornerstone was laid in February, 1924, for Jones Hall on the College of Puget Sound campus. The building was designed by architects Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, who later designed several other campus structures. ca. 1934. Eleven football players from the 1934-35 College of Puget Sound squad line up in this circa 1934 photograph. The team included two African American players, Brennen King and Jess Brooks, unusual for the time. Jess Brooks was a 1932 graduate of Lincoln High School, where he was the first African American student to win the coveted Richard Graff award, for high scholastic achievement and athletic prowess.
