Every nook-and-cranny in Stadium Bowl is jam-packed for 1926's 4th of July festivities. 40,000 witnessed the celebration of the 150th anniversary of American independence. Participants in the night's celebration included marines from the battleships in Commencement Bay and the guns of battery B, 10th Field Artillery from Camp Lewis. Cast members of play presented by Gault Intermediate School pose on stage in late January of 1928 during what was probably dress rehearsal. "The Little Princess" was performed by Gault 9th graders as a feature of graduation exercises. The play was first presented on Wednesday afternoon, January 25th, for school pupils. Most, if not all, intermediate schools (later called junior highs) put on at least one play during the school year. Gault Intermediate was renamed Gault Junior High also in 1928. The first graduation of Bellarmine scholars occurred in June of 1929. The nineteen young graduates posed with church dignitaries under the banner "Ad Omnia Paratus, " ( "Prepared for All Things" ) in the St. Leo's school auditorium. Right Rev. Edward J. O'Dea, Bishop of Seattle, presided over the exercises. Others in attendance on stage included Tacoma Mayor James Newbegin and principal speaker, Camille Pessemier. The Catholic high school for boys, then called Bellarmine College, was founded in 1928 with an enrollment of 150. This is the "12-B" class of Lincoln High School. They posed for a group shot on March 14, 1930, in the bleachers of Lincoln Bowl. Although this photograph was included in the 1930 Lincolnian yearbook, names of the students were not provided. G47.1-005 (1930 Lincolnian, p. 44)

Lincoln High School presented its annual Christmas program on December 22, 1931. The 60-piece orchestra and 100-member chorus posed together with director, Margaret Goheen (far left, first row). Handel's "Messiah, " Lincoln High School's oratorio was so much in demand that a repeat performance was held the following Sunday at Mason Methodist Church. 2600 people wanted free admission to the school performance but the school auditorium only had 1500 seats. The News Tribune reported that the students gave a fine performance with a pleasing appearance by the singers, dressed in black and white surplices for the chorus and white for the soloists. Jason Lee School 9A class. The ninth grade class poses in the school gymnasium under a basketball hoop with a torn net. Jason Lee opened in 1924, the first and biggest of the six intermediate schools built with proceeds from a $2.4 million bond issue passed in 1923. By the end of its first year, the school was already overcrowded with 1600 students in a school built to accomodate 1200. It was added on to in 1968 and remodeled in 1966 and 1972. The school reopened in 2002 after extensive remodeling.

ca. 1935. Boy from Jason Lee Orchestra playing bassoon in front of school. The boy is probably Bruce Allen, a noted juvenile bassoonist, who would have been around 9 years old at the time of this picture. The bassoon is one of the most difficult wood instruments and is usually not attempted by such young players. By 1938, Bruce had been studying for over 2 years and played in the Tacoma Times Jr. Concert Band (formerly known as the Mickey Mouse Band.) He was placed first chair by the conductor of the Junior Orchestra at the 1938 high school music festival in St. Louis. (T. Times 1/8/1937, pg. 7; T. Times 5/20/1938)

On April 22, 1936, students across the nation expressed their displeasure with governmental policy by taking part in a massive anti-war demonstration at 11 a.m. This large group of students, standing among the trees in the school's courtyard, is from Stadium High School. They joined high school and college students throughout the U.S., France, Belgium, Spain and Puerto Rico in the massive walkout pledging their refusal to support any present or future wars and protesting the nation's armament program. In Tacoma, over 500 students walked out of classes at Lincoln High School at 11 a.m. Some of them gathered with the students at Stadium at 12 noon, who chose to demonstrate during lunch periods rather than walking out of class. Large demonstrations with speakers were held at the College of Puget Sound and the University of Washington in Seattle. Sponsors estimated that 400,000 students took part nationwide, a great deal more than were involved in similar demonstrations in 1934 and 1935. (T.Times 4/22/1936, pg. 1) TPL-3214

The bleachers at Lincoln High School are filled to capacity with fans watching the 1935 runner up, the Superior Dairy team, play the 1935 champs, the Beacon Oilers. ca. 1937. Stadium High School Girls' Marching Unit, the Tigerannas, ca. 1937. The Tigerannas were formed in 1937 to march with the Stadium Band, providing a little extra color to performances. They were the brainchild of R.C. Fussell, Stadium Instrumental director. The 45 girls were photographed standing in wing formation. Their uniforms are short, shiny dresses in blue and gold with matching Cossack boots and pillbox style hats. (T.Times 10/15/1937, pg. 8) (WSHS)

In March of 1937, the Stadium High School orchestra was tuning up and practicing for the upcoming premier of the original opera "Masquerade," written by their instructor Clayton Johnson, shown here conducting. Mr. Johnson graduated from the College of Puget Sound and after further studies, returned to Tacoma to take the post of Director of Music at Stadium High School. He held that position for 30 years, counting among his students Janis Paige, star of stage and screen, and Metropolitan Opera performers Roald Reitan and Hugh Thompson. "Masquerade" was one of two operas Mr. Johnson wrote during his tenure at Stadium. He died in June of 1982 at the age of 83. (T. Times, 04-01-1937, p.1; TNT 06-21-1982, pg. C-12)
