ca. 1948. Central School. Central School was built in 1912. Heath & Gove were the architects for the eight-story English Gothic structure. Battlements crown the turrets on the tower's corners. F.H. Goss was the contractor. The school was built on the site of Washington College that later became Tacoma High School. Central School opened formally the fall of 1913. The bell from the former Central School (located at 1114 South Altheimer Street) was installed in the new building. The eight story tower dominates the exterior of the building on the corner of South 8th Street and Tacoma Avenue South.

In January of 1936, an unidentified Central School Safety Patrol guard decked out in a new, bright yellow poncho and rain hat holds back a large group of children with his stop sign pole. By 1936, the Tacoma school safety patrol had overseen the street crossings for seven straight years without a single accident. To honor the guards' vigilance, they were given new uniforms that matched their yellow stop signs. (TNT 1/31/1936, pg. 1)

No you're not seeing double; in February of 1936, Naval Avenue School in Bremerton boasted of 8 sets of twins, more twins than any other institution in the city of comparable size. Four sets of twins were enrolled in the first grade. On August 31, 1936 two unidentified workmen delivered fifty new typewriters to the Central School building at 601 South 8th Street - just in time for the new school year, which began September 1st. The typewriters were ordered from Stationers, Inc. at 926 Pacific Avenue. The "new" Central School opened in 1913, and was used as a school building until 1968 when it was converted to the Districts administrative headquarters.

Tribune, Ernie Knight.After the Second World War, many retuning soldiers from Tacoma/Pierce County took advantage of the GI Bill to return to school. This is the fifth graduating class at Tacoma Vocational School. 123 students received their apprentice certificates at Tacoma Vocational School June 3, 1949. Speeches were given by L.H. Bates, director of the school, and Superior Judge Hugh J. Rosellini, the guest speaker. The school was renamed in honor of L. H. "Vern" Bates in 1969. (TNT, 6/5/1949, p.A-4)

Fife High School Senior Class, News Tribune, Mr. Knight. Sisty-six students were graduated at Fife High School June 1, 1949. Seniors are seated on stage, and the audience watches from the basketball floor and side galleries. Names are listed in the newspaper. Pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima in St. Joseph's Hospital, St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Sister Marie Geralds. The renowned "Pilgrim Virgin" statue of Our Lady of Fatima arrived Sunday, May 29, 1949, at St. Patrick's Church for two days and two nights on its "Crusade for Peace" across America. Carved from cedar by Thedim, Portugal's foremost sculptor, it is a replica of the statue of the Blessed Virgin which stood in the Basilica in the Cova da Iria, 60 miles north of Lisbon where the Mother of God appeared to three small children in 1917.
