Annual Judges Banquet at University-Union Club. Seated are Govenor-elect Arthur B. Langlie (center), Mayor Harry P. Cain (perched on arm of chair) and U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd T. Black. Others in the November 21, 1940, photograph include State Supreme Court justices William J. Steinert, C.G. Jeffers, Samuel R. Driver, George B. Simpson, John T. Robinson and retired justice William D. Askew. The 33rd annual dinner for state supreme court judges was held on Thanksgiving Eve, November 20, 1940, with 271 men in attendance. Mayor Cain acted as Toastmaster. Mr. Langlie had been involved in a very close gubernatorial race with Spokane Democrat and former U.S. Senator C.C. Dill who refused to concede weeks after the election. Mr. Langlie would be the only GOP candidate to win a major office in Washington State in 1940. TPL-4586. Judges Banquet at Univ.- Union Club. Each year state supreme court judges gathered for a banquet; the November 21, 1941, dinner at the University-Union Club would have been the 34th. Also invited were Pierce County superior court judges and judges of the federal courts. Reno Odlin, Tacoma banker, was the toastmaster. Mayor Harry P. Cain is standing, extreme right; seated in the center is Chief Justice John Robinson, flanked by Supreme Court justices John F. Main and George B. Simpson. U.S District Court Judge Lloyd T. Mrs. Roosevelt is the head of the women's defense activities for the nation and was making several stops in the West Coast and Pacific Northwest to meet with state and local defense councils. Cain, holding a cigarette, is to the right of Mrs. Roosevelt. Mrs. Roosevelt was paying a short visit to Tacoma to speak to local civil defense leaders in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. Eleanor Roosevelt attends a luncheon at the University-Union Club. Mayor Harry P. Cain is to the right of Mrs. Roosevelt. Also in attendance were John and Anna Boettiger; Mrs. Boettiger is the daughter of President and Mrs. Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt was visiting several major cities on the West Coast and the Pacific Northwest as head of the women's defense activities for the nation. Pearl Harbor had occurred just six days before her visit to Tacoma; she had met with several state and local defense councils to assess the nation's readiness. Tacoma's brand new mayor, Val Fawcett, (center) with two unidentified men while attending the Electrical Products Banquet at the University - Union Club on June 3, 1946. Mayor Fawcett had been sworn into office that morning. He had served four terms as finance commissioner and also served as acting mayor during Harry P. Cain's absence. Mayor Fawcett's father, Angelo, was also Tacoma's mayor for several terms. ALBUM 14.

Tacoma Mayor C. Val Fawcett, (2nd from R), with a group of men attending the Electrical Products Banquet at the University - Union Club the evening of his June 3rd swearing in. Mayor Fawcett was already well known in Tacoma politics as he had served four terms as finance commissioner and also assumed the duties of mayor for an extended period of time when Harry P. Cain entered the Army. Val Fawcett was the son of former multi-term mayor A.V. Fawcett, nicknamed the "fightin' mayor." ALBUM 14.
