Beginning of the whisker growing contest at the College of Puget Sound. Over 50 young men had signed up for the two week "Whisker Derby," with the coronation of the winner coinciding with Homecoming on October 26, 1939. Whisker styles were supposed to be in keeping with those popular 48 years prior, when the first class graduated from CPS. Pictured are Bill Moore and Jack Hungerford on the left registering with Gwen Roach. Pacific Lutheran College 1939 May Day festivities. Queen Vivian Lunde pictured on her throne surrounded by her court. Queen Vivian was a member of the graduating class of the Normal department of the college. The throne faced the entrance of the college. It was a traditional silver chair backed by a lattice of spring flowers with tall baskets of Dogwood, Apple blossoms, lilac and palms. Included in the Queen's court were High school attendants Barbara Xavier and Betty Jo Forster, Freshmen Anne Lassen and Lenore Rasmussen, Sophomores Carol Haavik and Caroline Hoff and Seniors Ruth Downton and Aagot Gerde. 1939 Pacific Lutheran College May Day Queen, Vivian Lunde, makes her traditional procession from Old Main to her throne. She is attended by three young girls, Mary Olson, Barbara DeBerry and Constance Hanson in period gowns of pastel organdy. Queen Vivian I is wearing a gown of white net over taffeta with a full skirt. It is topped by a white lace jacket with pearl studded flowers. Her bouquet is made of pink roses and snap dragons. She strolls between two lines of senior girls in pastel gowns holding a ribbon on each side, forming a corridor for the processional. (T. Times 5/2/1939, pg. 1)

Pacific Lutheran College May Day festivities and dedication of new Library Building. Many people inspect library reading room. Ground was broken May 1, 1937 for the new library designed by E.J. Bresemann, of Heath, Gove and Bell, architects. With the construction of a new library in 1968, this building was remodeled and named Xavier Hall. (T. Times, 5/2/1939, p. 4)

On May 1, 1939, as the orchestra played "Pomp and Circumstance," eighteen senior girls gowned in pastel formals advanced bearing ribbons to form an aisle from Old Main to the May Queen throne. Queen Vivian Lunde, preceded by the ladies of her court, marched in procession.

College of Puget Sound Adelphian Chorus dressed in new Latvian costumes for their Northwest tour. The chorus will be attired in native costumes during a portion of their Spring concert tour. The new residence hall for women at the College of Puget Sound, circa March of 1939. The brick structure was erected in 1938, the school's fiftieth anniversary year. It was opened during the second semester January 30, 1939 and dedicated February 15, 1939. On the ground floor were a service room and large activity room, the main floor contained the lounge, office, dining room and kitchen, and the second and third floors were sleeping rooms for 40 students. The newest music group at the College of Puget Sound goes by the name of the "Conservatory Quartet." The mixed quartet, wearing school sweaters with Adelphian emblem, gather around pianist to rehearse Christmas carols as he plays the piano for the group in the Conservatory music studio. College of Puget Sound Advanced Journalism class gets a front line view of the world of newspaper publishing in the office of veteran publisher Sydney Albert Perkins on November 22, 1939. The students spent an hour interviewing Mr. Perkins on opportunities in the field of journalism and methods of story development. Standing, left to right, are Tacoma Times columnist E.T. Short, students Betty Thralls, Mary Mladinov, James Clymont, Carl Lindgren, Virginia Marinoff, Mr. Perkins (seated) and Betty Cleary. Seated left are William Melton, Eleanor Weaver, Clarice Ross and Helen Gassaman. One topic of conversation was the many autographed photos of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Congressmen and national political figures on the walls, a souvenir of Perkins' days in Washington, D.C. where he served as private secretary to Senator Mark Hanna. Mr. Perkins had probably the finest collection of signed photographs in the country, including portraits of the most prominent men of the nation over the past two decades. (T. Although threatened with both humiliation and physical harm by his fraternity brothers, Herman Kleiner survived "Hell Night" at the College of Puget Sound and became a member of Delta Kappa Phi. In this photograph from December of 1939, Johnnie Esthen (left) and Norman Burke force young Mr. Kleiner to board a Tacoma bus dressed in little more then a barrel. Kleiner went on to graduate from CPS in 1943 with a major in Sociology.

The group was in its final round of rehearsals before their concert at Central Lutheran Church. It's that wacky time again, time for the 12th annual Freshman Stunt Night at the College of Puget Sound, presented under the supervision of the Department of Dramatic Art. History will never be the same after September 20, 1940 when the Freshmen take aim at George Washington, Helen, Paris and the Trojan Horse, among others. Pictured left to right are Norma Gagliardi, Walter Ebbett, Aldo Benedetti (kneeling), Kay Copeland, Beverly Birdsall and Jack Miller. The four skits to be presented to students and the public are "George Washington's Life Story, Sort of Chopped Up by the Little Hatchet with which He Carved Out the United States," "Paris, This is It" (the love story of Helen, Paris and the Trojan Horse), a Baby Contest and "Spot Cash," the story of a fifty dollar bill as it changes hands.
