The graduates would attend mass and receive holy communion followed by a breakfast prepared by the Visitation Women's Club. One student was usually chosen who exemplified the qualities of the Virgin May as the May Queen. Here the Queen wears a bridal gown. The four young women graduating from high school are seated in the front wearing white graduation robes and motor boards and holding dark roses. Standing straight and tall are Anita Hale and the thirteen "posture duchesses" who made up her court for the 1949 Annual May Festival at Stewart Junior High School, 5010 Pacific Avenue. Anita, eighth from the left, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Hale, had been named Queen of the Festival; Shirley Crayton, fifth from the left, was Grand Duchess of the fete. Festival activities included a performance by the Stewart 68- piece band, dancing on the school lawn, a traditional Maypole, and the May Queen's Ball. Gault Junior High School was named after Dr. Franklin B. Gault, Superintendent of Tacoma Public Schools between 1888 to 1892. The school was built and opened in 1926, it was originally called Franklin B. Gault Intermediate School, but was renamed Gault Junior High School in 1928. Ransome Rolfe was one of the ace pitchers for the Lincoln Axemen in 1949. In his first two games of the season, he struck out 24 batters. In 1949 Lincoln tied with Stadium for second place in the Cross-State League. Lincoln High School's baseball team was being coached by Bill Mullen. (Lincolnian, 1949, p. 68-69).

Tacoma Vocational-Technical School offered training for all types of trades. In 1949 there were 500 students in attendance with 1,400 more as apprentices. Here six men are learning to install and repair utility lines in the electrical lineman trade, one of 50 trades offered. The three students at left are identified as (in no particular order) Ed Sorger, Jr., George Blanc and Tom Padden. Strapped securely by lineman's belts, some are working on transformers on genuine, although shortened, poles. The Tacoma Vocational-Technical School was operated by the Tacoma public school system in compliance with the state plan for vocational education. This photograph taken on January 27, 1949 shows Jerry Meyers (3rd from the left) carefully performing his duties as a school patrol officer for McKinley School. The other students are (l to r) Bobby Booth, Donna Fay Lechner, Patricia May Johnston, Billy McDougal, Carroll Barret, and Randy Norton. The Tacoma schools patrol service received national recognition in 1949 for completing 20 years of service, through all kinds of weather, with not one fatality at any school. An exterior view of Mont Downing Elementary School designed by Lea, Pearson and Richards, Architects. The school was named after Mont Downing, a Tacoma educator who had been an elementary school principal 13 years and district assistant superintendent 11 years. The building had eight classrooms, an auditorium/lunchroom and a large basement playing area; the building cost was $350,000. (TNT, 8/19/1949, p.10) TPL-1558.
