The Gault Junior High "Nonettes" and their accompanist, dressed in strapless evening gowns with chiffon or net stoles, gather around a piano to practice for the Gault PTA Talent Parade, which was held on November 20, 1953. The talent show gave all the music groups at Gault an opportunity to display their talents. The concert was followed by carnival activities throughout the school: a white elephant grab bag and candy, punch, plant, fancywork and food booths. Lowell students and their principal prepare for a howling good time at the '53 Halloween Carnival. The Lowell School Parent-Teacher and Preschool Association sponsored a school carnival on Friday October 23, 1953. Pictured left to right are Sammie Warren, Nancy Conly, principal Clarence Monson, Andy Levesque, Tommy Rowland and Judith Sleep.With his chef's hat and apron, Principal Monson looks as if he'll be manning the hot dog grill. The carnival midway had over 30 booths including fun booths where students could throw darts at balloons or shoes at stuffed animals; food booths with ice cream, hot dogs and pop corn; and craft booths where they could make decorations or put on make-up. Dr. Seth C. Eastvold, President of Pacific Lutheran College, and his wife Enga are getting ready to depart on a three month trip to Europe. The Eastvold's will be visiting England, Scandinavian countries, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Italy. Dr. Eastvold plans to make two quick stops prior to leaving for Europe. In Moorhead, Minnesota he will give the Commencement Address at Concordia University, and he will attend the Biennial Convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The Eastvolds will return to Tacoma in September (T. Times, 5/29/48, p. 10).

May Day celebration. The royal court that reigned over the Pacific Lutheran College's May festival held May 8, 1948, included Queen Ardys Bredvold, seated in the center. Seated in front of her are two sophomore attendants, L-R, Jean Hesla and Phyllis Brynestad. Other attendants standing in the back, L-R, are: Dolores Berg, Doris Berg, Afton Hjelm, Anita Roth, Catherine Breum and Doris Johnson. Manitou School group. A group portrait of the third grade class at Manitou School in 1948. There are seven girls and fifteen boys. Economic pressures of World War I caused building of a new school in the Manitou neighborhood to be postponed. After approval of a bond issue a four-room tile structure was erected in 1919 at the new Manitou site. Additions and remodeling were done in 1924 and 1957. In 1912, land was purchased in the Manitou Grove Addition as a new site for the school. But, when parents asked that portables be added on the park site, they were told students could attend Edison or Oakland schools. Manitou School group. A group portrait of one of the school classes at Manitou School. There are thirteen girls and sixteen boys.The School Board was faced with tough questions in 1911. How to provide for a school population that was increasing at the rate of nearly 1,000 new students per year? Voters approved a special levy on May 6, 1911, for several new elementary schools and a new high school. A portable was secured for the Manitou neighborhood and in September, Sara Cochrane began teaching the first three grades in the one-room building. Members of the Manitou Improvement Club began petitioning the School Board in 1910 to locate a school in their neighborhood in the southwest area of the city. Instead, the Board moved a one-story building from Tacoma to District 38 and furnished transportation for students to attend there. CPS. Dr. R. Franklin Thompson, President of the College of Puget Sound, and John Heinrick, Athletic Director at CPS, hold an architectural drawing of the proposed new field house at the campus. Three other men stand behind the drawing by Dugan, Mock and Morrison Architects. Groundbreaking took place August 4, 1948, and the building was dedicated to the 138 men who had been students at the college who died in World War II.

Sigma Nu Fraternity. The 101st Sigma Nu fraternity chapter was installed April 24, 1948. It was the Zeta Alpha chapter on the College of Puget Sound campus. On the left is Arthur A. Barlow, First Vice Regent of Sigma Nu. The local chapter president, Clarence Nelson, is in the middle. The man on the right may be Malcolm C. Sewell, General Secretary of the national organization, who arrived April 23rd from Indianapolis for the ceremony at the Corinthian Room, Masonic Temple. Harvel was formerly with the Tacoma Tigers. One young man is reviewing materials from a notebook. The program consisted of talks by Miss Maxine Blake and Miss Jacquine Norback about college life from the student's view point. Lona Huseby played Chopin and Debussy on the piano. They are dressed in summer play clothes including pedal pushers, shorts, and blouses, some with midriffs exposed. Helen Andres was one of the directors of the May festival for 1948.
