The 12-room Lowell Elementary School at 810 North 13th Street, built to replace the original Lowell School, was completed in February 1951. This view of the exterior of the school shows the concrete steps up to the entrance of the two-story school. Lowell School can trace its history back to the first school in Tacoma, a cabin built at North 28th and Starr streets. The school shown replaced the Lowell school built in 1892; that building had to be torn down after being damaged by the great 1949 earthquake. The exterior of A.V. Fawcett Elementary School that opened in 1950. The eight-room school was named for Angelo Vance Fawcett. This was the Fawcett School P.T.A. (Parent Teachers Association) carnival committee in November of 1951. The P.T.A. and pre-school sponsored a carnival on November 30, 1951, at the school. Besides enjoying a spaghetti dinner, students and guests enjoyed a magic show, movies, dart games, fish pond and tiny cars plus a toy shop booth with Santa. Exterior view of A.V. Fawcett Elementary School. Fawcett Elementary, located at 126 East 60th Street, was named for Angelo Vance Fawcett, five-time mayor of Tacoma. Contracts to build the school were awarded in June, 1949, and the school opened the following fall. Initially the school only had eight rooms; further expansion has followed through the years. Gathered around Tacoma's historic totem pole at 10th and A St. in this picture from November of 1951 are several of the principals in the fifth annual "Totem Bowl" football game which brings together the College of Puget Sound (UPS) and Pacific Lutheran College (PLU) teams Saturday November 10th in the Lincoln Bowl. Left to right are Co-Captains Don Murdock and Bob Demko of the Puget Sound squad; Eileen McArthur, C.P.S. yell queen; Bob Nielsen, P.L.C. Captain, and Jack Enochs, P.L.C. yell king. Miss McArthur and Enochs led student body groups from the two schools in a joint pep rally at the totem pole on Friday Nov. 9th. Annie Wright Seminary. Mr. Karl Weiss is pictured with two girls in the school library in November of 1951. He is explaining illustrations of Christ and Mary shown in a portfolio. Mr. Weiss taught civic and music classes at Annie Wright. The 1952 school yearbook, the "Shield," was dedicated to him in appreciation for all he had given to the students both spiritually and scholastically.

The Junior Class (Class of 1953) are seen at Annie Wright Seminary. The junior class with 29 students was the largest junior class in the history of Annie Wright. They presented "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" for honorable mention at Halloween and "The Mikado" operetta. Names are listed in the school yearbook for 1952, The Shield.

View of Dupont School Patrol. The Dupont School District, like its Tacoma counterpart, also had school patrol officers. Unlike Tacoma, however, a large number of students participating in this safety program were girls. Numerous patrol officers posed for a group picture in October, 1951. Most were wearing their patrol badges. Adults in the photograph were apparently school officials; there is also an armed police officer stationed at the picture's far right hand edge.

Lincoln High School fielded a large football team in 1951. Coached by Norm Mayer and led by right tackle and captain, Frank Paige, the Abes were runner-ups in the 9th annual Grid-Go-Round held in September, 1951. The Stadium Tigers defended their title when they defeated Lincoln 6-0. Although the varsity only won three games during the season, the highlight probably came as they tied the perenniel powerhouse Stadium team 6-6 on a foggy Thanksgiving day. According to the Lincolnian yearbook, post-season honors were awarded to Frank Paige as all-city tackle and Warren Billingsley, guard, first team all Cross-State. On July 19, 1951, workmen were cutting and installing one-inch blankets of insulation in the band room at the new chapel-music-speech building at Pacific Lutheran College. The J-M system of sound isolation was being used to control sound waves which are transmitted by structural vibration. Light weight and specially constructed floors, walls and ceilings were entirely divorced from the building structure by means of felted isolators. The floating interior had no rigid contact with the outer solid structure of the building. The felt cushioned isolators took up the sound impulses which otherwise would be transmitted throughout the structure. (TNT, 7/22/1951, p.C-12)

Men are smoothing on one of the three layers of plaster on the ceiling and high along one of the walls in the new chapel-music-speech building at Pacific Lutheran College in July of 1951. Acoustical plaster was used on two walls of each room, above the dado, or wainscoating; and on a strip across the middle of the ceiling. The structure incorporated the latest engineering features designed to cut noise to a minimum. Students in one of the seventeen 6-foot by 10-foot practice rooms should seldom hear sounds coming from practice rooms on either side of them. The building also had seven studios, a band room, choir room and radio studio. (TNT, 7/22/1951, p.C-12)

1951 construction work on the exterior of the new chapel-music-speech building at Pacific Lutheran College. Brick veneer is being laid by men working from scaffolding. Scaffolding is still in place around a steeple that has been added above the roof. Architect John Richards explained that the design of the rooms in the building were unusual. The walls and ceilings were not true, or straight. The ceiling in some rooms slanted up, in others it slanted down. The same was true of the walls. The purpose of this was to break up the reverberation of sound waves. (TNT, 7/22/1951, p.C-12)

The apprentices, who studied courses ranging from bookbinding to sign painting, were awarded certificates indicating they had completed a course in their particular field. The men wore plaid shirts and jeans while the women wore floor-length print dresses that twirled in the air as they spun.
