The annual outdoor May Day Program was held Friday, May 5, 1950, at Stewart Junior High School. The ceremonies climaxed a year's work and competition in health and posture training. Two workmen standing on scaffolding are removing plywood forms from a ceiling at Lowell School. A new building was necessary since the older school had been declared unsafe after the April 1949 earthquake. This was the second disaster survived by the school. By the close of the 1940's, Europe and Asia were at peace, but the R.O.T.C. program continued to function as an important segment of the school's activities. The R.O.T.C. remained involved in the daily activities of the school: for example, a salute at the breaking of the bread, and sponorship of school dances held every year. Members of the R.O.T.C. at Bellarmine High School march in formation and the color guard carry the R.O.T.C. and United States flags in this photograph from May of 1950. The rifle team brought considerable publicity to the private school and city by winning second place in the Sixth Army intercollegiate and interscholastic rifle matches, small bore; second place in the William Randolph Hearst rifle competition in the Army area; and sixth place in the entire United States. Bellarmine became the second high school in the State of Washington to secure a Junior Reserve Officer Taining Corps program in 1935. At that time the program served mainly as a vehicle to help students attend the high school. The library was designed by local Tacoma architect Emanuel J. Bresemann and was dedicated in 1939 and remodeled in the late forties. The Clover Park High small performing choir with their director Peter J. Barden. The small choir travelled and performed for various school organizations and clubs. Dr. Seth Eastvold, President of Pacific Lutheran College, and bronze dedication plaque hung mid February 1950 on the front exterior wall of the Student Union Building. The plaque cites the donors that made the construction of the building possible. The Student Union Building housed many of the students' activities and included such facilities as the main auditorium, organ practice rooms, college bookstore, general lounge, coffee shop and several offices. Dr. Eastvold's administration, 1943-1962, was characterized by capital expansion. (TNT 2-26-1950 A-10)

Gaily decorated box lunches for two are auctioned off at the annual old fashioned Box Lunch Social in the main lounge of the Student Union building at Pacific Lutheran College. The event where coeds prepare elaborately designed containers with meals to be purchased by and consumed with the highest collegiate bidder was sponsored by the Lutheran Students Association with proceeds going to charity.

The fourteen student members of the College of Puget Sound Choral Readers perform in recital in Jones Hall Auditorium. The group, under the direction of Martha Pearl Jones, performed a diversified program of ensemble verse readings. Members were Herb Stark, leader, Gloria Nelson, assistant leader, Doug Cullen, Ellen Davenport, Mary Kincheloe, Helen Pearson, Kaye Klopfenstein, Mel Gidley, William Gianelli, Dale Lee, David Stell, Fern McCullough, Claudia Zediker and Homer Johnson. The students of Edison Elementary School stand in front of and peer out the windows of Gray Junior High's Barlow annex on March 8, 1950. Edison Elementary was badly damaged by the big 1949 earthquake, but the full extent of the damages was not realized until engineering studies were completed in February 1950. The school was condemned and ordered closed. With their school suddenly closed, the 540 Edison students had to attend classes in the Gray Jr. High annex - in double shifts. At Edison, the children had filled nineteen classrooms. In the annex building, they were squeezed into nine classrooms with half attending 8 a.m.- 12:15p.m., and the second shift attending 12:30p.m. - 4:45p.m. The children peering from the windows are about to leave, to make way for the second shift waiting outside. Exterior picture of completed Lowell Elementary, 810 No. 13th. Established in Old Tacoma in 1869, Lowell holds the distinction of being the district's oldest school. It was originally known as the First Ward School and served families living west of Division Avenue. After several locations, it was renamed Lowell School and was located at No. 12th & Yakima. When Tacoma's earthquake hit at noon on April 13, 1949, Lowell student Marvin Klegman was killed by falling chimney bricks when leaving his classroom to take his post as a patrol boy. Two other Lowell students were hurt and the school was condemned. Students finished out the year at Grant, Bryant and Jason Lee until they moved into their new classrooms on No.13th St. in November of 1950. Construction on the school was completed in February of 1951.

The choir at Pacific Lutheran College, directed by Gunnar J. Malmin, would be giving its annual pre-tour Tacoma concert at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. On January 5, 1951, three unidentified Tacoma Athletic Commission members posed with tennis stars (in white, left to right) Pancho Segura, Pauline Betz Addie, Gertrude "Gussie" Moran and Jack Kramer at the Bobby Riggs Professional Tennis Show held in the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. TAC and the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club cosponsored the two singles and the doubles match offered in the nationally touring show. The most exciting matches were those of Kramer, who was top of the amateur field, and Segura, the flashy Latin player from Ecuador with the two handed forehand and backhand returns. "Gorgeous Gussie" Moran, consistently rated in the top 10 of this country, was better known for her fashion statements such as her ruffled tennis undies. Addie, who had worn the national women's crown for four years, was also known as a sharp dresser and the two women consistently tried to out dress each other. A portion of the evenings returns were donated to the March of Dimes. (TNT 1/5/1951, pg. 15)
