Russell H. "Russ" Michael (far right) poses in front of his service station at 3740 So. M. St. with the baseball team that he sponsored. The team had just won the Twilight League Baseball Championship for 1938. Russ Michael opened his station in 1936. He had previously worked at the Michael Brothers Service Station. In the 1950s he started Michael's Oil Service at 1315 So. 38th. Russ Michael died April 14, 1991 at the age of 79.

This was Lincoln High School's baseball team in 1938. The photograph is identical to A7195, image 1, except for the omission of printed school identification. 15 boys are in uniform, supplemented by two student managers with letterman sweaters and coach Eddie Schwarz. Bellarmine Midget Football players, 1938 city wide champions. Twenty-five boys and coach Leo Eckstein pictured on the field. The Bells beat the Lincoln High School Railsplitters 14 to 7 in the Championship. Midget football was for boys classified as 132 pounds and under. A large group of competitors at the Pacific Northwest Archery Association's 13th Annual Tournament held on August 5-6, 1939 at the Jefferson Park archery range posed behind a line of trophies. Sixty competitors vied for the Northwest title, with Mr. and Mrs. Pat Chambers of Portland taking home most of the men's and women's trophies. The 13th annual Pacific Northwest Archery Association Tournament was held August 5-6, 1939 at the Jefferson Park ranges in Tacoma. Tacoma was well represented in the Junior Division with Dorothy Axtelle, left, and Sonny Johns, second from left, winning the Northwest Junior titles. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Chambers, right, of Portland won the men's and women's titles. The couple were the defending title holders. Mr. Chambers was also the current men's national champion. Sam Jackson, wearing a straw hat with a "Golden Jubilee" hat band, helped make July 23, 1939 special for two unidentified polio victims by taking them to a double header at Athletic Park, near So. 15th and Sprague. Three Tigers players sat behind the young patients, who were separated by two women (their mothers?), to have the day captured on film. Samuel Jackson was president of the Tacoma General Hospital and chairman of the board of the National Bank of Washington. The Tigers lost the first game of the day to Vancouver 6 to 5, but won the second 2 runs to 1, the Tigers' pitcher, Carl Brady, having given up only 3 hits. The "Golden Jubilee" was the Tacoma celebration of Washington's 50th anniversary of statehood.

State Champion Fife High School Trojans tumble to the ground in a heap in this November 1939 portrait. The victorious Trojans won the State Class B Football Championship with a 7-0 victory over the favored Poulsbo Vikings. At the top of the pyramid is Pete Mello. Directly below are Pete Cereghino, Frank Spear and Milton Iida. 3rd Row: Seiichi Yamada, Bob Vinson and Frank Evancich. 4th Row: Kenji Yaguchi, Masaru Tamura, Yohei Sagami and Joe Trucco. Bottom row: Howard Bryan, Willie Haminishi, Tom Pruett and Ben Holdner. The Trojans, under the direction of Coach Bill Vinson, had a 10 game unbeaten season, and were the state's highest scoring team, scoring 328 points to their opponents' 19. Half of the team is made up of Japanese-American players. Fife was having a very successful year, winning 9 straight games on their way to becoming the Pierce County B League Champions. They continued on to defeat the favored Poulsbo Vikings 7-0 to become the State Champions.
