"Miss Grunow" provided a little cheesecake as the company introduced their new refrigerator at the Southwest Washington Grunow Dealers banquet at the new Tacoma Hotel, formerly known as the Tacoma Hotel Annex, on February 18, 1937. The "Pur-Aire" refrigerator featured the "econo-phase vacuum unit" for fast freezing and low cost, a Grunow aerator to keep food fresher and safer and a super size evaporator. Hickey Apartment Hotel, interior. Suite with telephone table, bedroom, and kitchen. Building by Roland Borhek, Architect, 1927. Renamed the Hickey Apartment Hotel in 1940, the eight-story, 68 apartment structure was originally called the Walker Apartments after its builder, Robert Walker of Walker Cut Stone. It was the first apartment house in the Northwest to be faced with stone. The Hickey name (after new owner J. Frank Hickey) did not last and the apartment hotel was sold in 1944. The Walker Apartments are on the City and National Register.

Frank Hickey changed the apartment hotel's name to reflect his own in October of 1940. He had purchased the (then) Walker Apartments in January of 1938. Hickey Apartment Hotel ( Walker Apartments ), interior which appears to be the lobby. Building by Roland Borhek, Architect, 1927. J. Frank Hickey purchased the former Walker Apartments in October of 1938 and changed its name to his own two years later. The elegant apartment hotel had been built for $350,000 by the owner of Walker Cut Stone and was the first apartment house in the Northwest to feature an all-stone exterior. It was sold again in 1944 and the property is now on the City and National Registers.

Now known as the Hickey Apartment Hotel with the purchase of the former Walker Apartments in 1938, it remained a luxurious structure with amenities such as dumbwaiters, living room suites, and separate dining room facilities. This December, 1940, view of a living room within the apartment hotel displays comfortable chairs and sofa, tables, and a piano.

ca. 1979. The Carlton Hotel, circa 1979. The Carlton was built in 1909 by Anton Huth, from a design by architect C.A. Darmer. The hotel was also home to the Barbary Coast restaurant.

ca. 1979. The ornate outline of the Samson Hotel, 1152-56 Fawcett Ave., shows clearly against a more modern office building in this Cysewski picture from 1979. The Hotel was built in 1889 from a design by F.A. Sexton and was converted to apartments in 1928. After several fires, the building was demolished in 1989. The site, in 2007, is a vacant lot.

Two gentlemen who were present at the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroads board of directors luncheon on July 13, 1950, at the Hotel Winthrop, gaze at an enlarged photograph of the newly completed Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed during high winds on November 7, 1940. The man seated at left is C.H. Buford, president of the Milwaukee Road.

The Ladies' Musical Club sponsored a concert by Hildegarde, a New York supper club singer who was on a concert tour across the continent, at Temple Theater. She would perform a 2 1/2 hour concert with her 12-piece orchestra. Her program included not the classics but favorites such as, "The Last Time I Saw Paris". She traveled with 35 evening costumes packed in specially built 6-foot trunks but would only be wearing two for her Tacoma appearance. Banquet in Army-Navy Room for Buick Motor Company Distributors, Mueller-Harkins, Rudy Mueller. Buick dealers and salesmen of Southwest Washington previewed the new Buick Special at the Mueller-Harkins Motor Company. Photographs from A Street side, also from back side and interior of Garden Room, Tacoma Hotel, Armand Marion. The Savage-Scofield Building, designed by Heath and Twichell architects in 1908, houses the Tacoma Hotel. The hotel's main building at 913 A Street was destroyed by a fire in 1935. The Tacoma Savings and Loan Building stands to the right of the hotel at 100 South 9th Street.

Hotel Winthrop was inviting all of Tacoma to join them in the grand opening celebration for the new Trader Vic's Sabre Room. Trader Vic is an internationally known restaurateur, and he has now brought his world famous menu items to Tacoma. The interior of the Sabre Room is modeled after an authentic old English tap room, with figured red carpet, copper bowl lamps, the walls give the impression of aged plaster in a driftwood color. Trader Vic and his wife will host the grand opening celebration.

A peplum with a longer back is also featured. The model wears a broad-brimmed, straw hat and carries a purse and cloves to match her platform shoes. Boat show at Hotel Winthrop. The first major Tacoma Boat Show in several years was held the week of August 17-22, 1948 in the lobby of the Hotel Winthrop. Western Boatbuilding displayed their Torpedo Flyer speed boat, and Pleasurecraft brought a fully rigged sailing dingy with a 19-foot mast. There were several models of boats on display including a cabin cruser built by Western Boat along with Chinese sampans and junks.
