On November 13, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. King posed with a 50 year old painting, an heirloom, which they were able to save from their room during the fast moving fire at the Golden Hotel on Pacific Ave. in Bremerton. Most of their other belongings were lost to the fire. The fire started in the kitchen of the ground floor Golden Cafe and quickly spread to the living quarters above. For Bremerton Sun. On November 13, 1935, fire broke out in the kitchen of the Golden Cafe in Bremerton, quickly spreading to the remainder of the building, including the Golden Hotel. This photograph was taken from the east side, showing the damage to the Golden Cafe, Hotel and the neighboring Crows Nest Cafe. More than 30 guests escaped being trapped by the fast moving fire. The building was already scheduled to be torn down and replaced. In addition to the Golden Cafe and Hotel, the building was also home to the Pacific Drug Co. and the Gate Confectionery. Monarch Club banquet at the Winthrop Hotel, Presidential Suite. The Presidential Suite was the most elaborate of the 24 "parlor" suites in the Winthrop. The living room was finished in Philippine Mahogany with paneled plastered walls and special lighting fixtures. (WSHS)

On October 17, 1935, one of the most spectacular fires in Tacoma's history completely destroyed The Tacoma Hotel. The hotel, which covered a square block from So. 8th to So. 9th and A St. to what is now I-705, opened in August, 1884. Designed by the architectural firm headed by Stanford White, it was the show place of Tacoma, and, many said, the most beautiful hotel north of San Francisco. BU-12,609, TPL-6564

Based on the ordering newspaper, the group must be followers of Calvinism. According to the Webster's Dictionary, the theological system of John Calvin and his followers is marked by a strong emphasis on the sovereignty of God, the depravity of mankind and the doctrine of predestination.

On the west side of the street is the Depot Super Service Station, offering Mobilgas from General Petroleum, at 1548-52 Pacific and the Hotel Lewis at 1522 Pacific. ca. 1939. Elevated view of the Hotel Winthrop, circa 1939. By this time, the Winthrop had been open for 14 years, celebrating its grand opening on May 16, 1925. The eleven story hotel was named after explorer and writer Theodore Winthrop whose book "The Canoe and the Saddle" helped popularize the Northwest.

Cliff Sign Co. hoists the new Tacoma Hotel sign to the top of the building. The ground floor is occupied by the National Cash Register Co., Budget Finance Plan, the Western Air Lines ticket office and at the far right, with the sign 1/4 visible, the Servicemen's Center at 115 So. 9th. This was the location of the bowling alley.

Fountains leap from a pond next to the Hotel Flamingo in Las Vegas, Nevada. The neon sign over the entrance to the hotel has an outline of a flamingo near the top. TPL-9676

The Olympus Hotel at 815-17 Pacific Ave. was originally built in 1909. In May of 1951 it re-opened after much needed modernization that included new wiring, new funiture, new plumbing and new lighting.This photograph of Becky Barker in a cowgirl outfit, lasso in hand, was taken to help advertise the hotel's dinning rooms. The Corral Room and Frontier Room had a western theme that offered a "Bit of the Old West" to Tacomans and hotel guests.

The Ladies' Musical Club sponsored a concert by Hildegarde, a New York supper club singer who was on a concert tour across the continent, at Temple Theater. She would perform a 2 1/2 hour concert with her 12-piece orchestra. Her program included not the classics but favorites such as, "The Last Time I Saw Paris". She traveled with 35 evening costumes packed in specially built 6-foot trunks but would only be wearing two for her Tacoma appearance. She is seen here looking from the window of her room at the Hotel Winthrop. Tacoma's City Hall can be seen through the window. (TNT, 4/18/1951, p.12)

Two men were inducted into the Quarter Century club of Standard Brands, Inc., at the annual dinner for the Northwest area at Winthrop Hotel. They were Walter A. Logan, a machinist in the maintenance deparment of the Sumner Fleischmann's yeast plant, and Clarence H. Romnes, who worked in the vinegar department. Acme News, Ronald Schaad. Some 75 Grunow refrigerator dealers and salesmen from Tacoma and Southwest Washington were invited to attend a dinner at the Tacoma Hotel on February 18, 1937 hosted by the F.B. Connelly Co. The 1937 Grunow model was on display , and "Miss Grunow," an attractive woman wearing a short dress and banner, danced on top of the tables for the delighted group. A banner in the background advertises: "There's a new Grunow refrigerator. Come see it today." (TNT 2/18 & 19/ 1937)

Broiled steak dinner set up at Winthrop. The Hotel Winthrop was well known for their delicious meals. This photograph shows an elegant place setting with a New York cut sirloin steak with french fried potatoes, garden salad and toasted garlic rolls on display. Additional items on the table include a small pitcher of cream, bowl of sugar, salt and pepper shakers, and gravy boat. This particular dinner special cost a hungry diner $3.50 in 1950.

The Hotel Winthrop on Broadway is the location for a luncheon honoring the board of directors of the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroads on July 13, 1950. The nine men are posed under the Rotary Club's banner. Seated second to the left is C.H. Buford, president of the Milwaukee Road. According to the Northwest Room's clipping files, this railroad was the first with improvements in transportation: owning and operating its own sleeping and dining cars, installing electric lighting and radio-phones in passenger trains, and being the only road to operate its own through tracks on its own tracks from Chicago to Puget Sound.

A major snow storm hit Tacoma January 13,1950. Tacoma received almost nine inches of snow, and the wind which reached over 25 miles per hour created drifts up to five feet high. It was the worst storm in years and caused major damage throughout the area. 20 foot waves washed away part of Ruston Way, and ten boats were sunk in the yacht club basin. This view of the front of the Olympus Hotel, 815 -17 Pacific Avenue, from January 14th, shows the snow heaped along the sidewalks where it was left by the plows trying to clear Pacific Avenue. This photograph from December 1949 of the Sabre Room in the Winthrop Hotel shows the popular Tacoma restaurant three months after its official opening in September. Created by Trader Vic to look like an authentic old-English tap room, the Sabre room was decorated in authentic English style and featured open hearth food service where you could see expert chefs prepare the food. The menu included roast beef cooked in rock salt, barbecued ribs, and steak and kidney pie - desert included trifle. The room could seat 110 persons, including the ladies' cocktail lounge.
